Tire size ?

The OEM tire or tyre (depending on where your from) size on my slk55
Are
Front 225/40 R18
Rear 245/35 R18

Has anybody when getting new rubber ever consider changing the rears for
245/40 R18?

That would only slightly increase the sidewall thickness
Would give a more balanced look (front & back the same)
And I would guess, soften up the ride slightly.

What are your thoughts on my logic/assumptions?

Most of us don't change the staggered look, only the width. Front to 235 and rear to 255 or even 265 but than you need to change the rim to 9.5".
Obviously people moving to 19" do need to step down a little in tire size.

What are your thoughts on my logic/assumptions?
You're wrong when you think that 245/40 rear will give you a more balanced look. The number behind the "/" does not give you the height of the tire in mm but in a percentage of the width.
So 225/40 = 0.4*225 is 90 mm
245/35 = 0.35*225 is 85.75 mm
245/40 = 0.4*245 is 98 mm
255/35 = 0.35*255 is 89.25 mm

For a balanced look follow Jeff's advice and go to 255 rear.
