standard brake performance vs c200 cgi

Hi, I have my 2008 SLK200 over a month and travelled over 1300km with her. I also have a 2010 w204 with 105000km on the odometer.

What strikes me is the braking behavior of those 2 cars. In slk the brakes are very soft at first 1" of pedal travel, then they grab exponentially. If Istomp on the pedal the car stops in a dime but in traffic the longer pedal travel and gradual action is a bit annoying. Needless to say my 1970 challenger and wife's corolla offer better gripping (faster) brakes.

In w204 the response is linear and braking feels firmer and more aggresive yet very well modulated. w204 has ATE sets all around.

In SLK I changed brake fluid, rear pads and rotors (ATE), front is OEM MB rotors and RAMSA pads looking very goos with plenty of life (like 90%).

How your SLKs (with standard brakes) behave ? Can you compare them to other MB ?

R171 - normal ABS brakes. Nothing special about it.
W211 - magic electronic brake-by-wire, weird at first, but really good once I got used to it.

Maybe you should consider changing elastic rubber hoses to something with steel braid on top? That should make brakes a bit "harder" as the hoses won't be expanding as much. Or go for a full upgrade to 6 pot brembo ;-)

Yeah going to braided hoses gives good results - I made that swap with my motorcycles. However what bothers me is the performance versus 2010 W204... and my other cars - I was wondering if it is ok or I have to look for some kind of problem...

I'm not familiar with ramsa brand, ATE are good. Sometimes worn disc and new pads can give a spongy feeling as there is a gap between pad and discIt should go away after a while unless the disc are badly worn. I don't think that's your problem anyway.

Go to a dealer (or komis ;-) ) and take another slk for a spin to get some reference point.

Sounds to me like they aren't bled correctly. Even a tiny bubble of air will give the symptoms you describe.

hmm can be. when I bought the car the brakes were even worse but this was due to lack of rear braking - MOT revealed that. Then I had the brake fluid changed in a reputable shop (not a dealer) and rear brakes rebuild with ATE parts.

I ordered ATE pads and will swap front ones to see if there is any gain. If not I'll go back to my workshop to have them rebleed.

Thanks for help and hint with dealer/komis. When I was test driving other SLKs I didnt notice soft brakes however rides were less temperamental and more granny-type.

Pedal travel is not related to pad material. All pads are hard and when you stand on the pedal, it should feel firm whichever pads you have. However, how that friction material interacts with the disc will vary from pad to pad.
If the rebuild was done at a reputable shop, I'm sure they wouldn't mind re-bleeding them for free. I think that should be your first move.

Good point. I tried break in the fron ones by hard braking several times from 160 to 0 but the grip was only slightly better. I'll ask the shop and we'll see.
