18" tire recommendations

I am replacing my 17" wheels with 18's. I don't want to go to an extremely low profile tire as I want to avoid wheel damage due to lack of "cushion" when encountering a pot hole.
Nor do I want to restrict the factory suspension from functioning properly and not have the tire hit the arch or well by using too tall of a tire. Any recommendations for tire sizes (height) to use on 18's?

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK forum from Madrid..

First please update your location and vehicle (year?: 1996-2016, model?: 32,
200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members
answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you
haven't. This takes about 30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: 'Usercp' at the top of page, then 'edit your
details' on the left side, 'additional information' near the bottom, edit
your 'location' and 'vehicle'. Info in your garage does not update your
profile.

Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly
so post an introduction in the 'New members introduce yourself here'
section, if you haven't already.

To be equivalent to factory sizes you'd be looking at 225/40/18 at the front and 245/40/18 or 245/35/18 or 255/35/18 at the rear..
