Same size tires on all wheels?

Need some advice on tires. I have had the 2009 SLK 300 for one week and while I love the car, the brand new Pirelli P Zero are high performance summer tires and I need all season tires. I want to put Michelin Primacy MXM4 on and if possible use the same size as the front tires on all four wheels - 225/45 R17 W.
I will try to convince the dealer to change the tires and I am prepared to pay any difference in price. Otherwise, I will replace the tires and sell the P Zeros.
While on the subject of tires, the collapsible spare seems a bad joke and I will likely ditch it in favour of a can of fix a flat and MB roadside assistance .
Any comments or advice on the feasibility and desirability of using the same size tires all round would be most welcome.

tires on front and rear are different sizes which is why you cannot rotate tires

The point of staggering a wheel/tire set up is to put more power to the ground by having more rubber on the rear wheels without suffering the steering penalty that wider front tires will often cause.

Yes, the rear tires are now size 245/40 R17 W; however, according to at least one tire configuration I tried, the front size is also an acceptable alternate. And obviously this would allow tire rotation.
Also, any comments on the ride quality and noise level with the Michelins would be welcome. Thanks.

do not put smaller tyres on rims that are too wide for them. You risk them coming off the rim as well as putting strain on the walls a tread area. Similarly dont put oversize tyres on smaller rims

Look at these charts for guidance

From the 2005 Mercedes SLK manual (see attachment). Yes, you can run the same size front and rear if you use the recommended tire size.

yes, you can do it, but does not mean you want or have to unless economically you have to.

Ok, I hear you. It is probably acceptable to use the same sized tires on front and back. But there may be handling benefits in keeping the original sizes so I will keep the OE sizes.
Normally, MB engineers get it right; but, they are also capable of giving us the useless cup holders and the nearly useless collapsible spare tire. In the case of offset tires, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.
Thanks for the comments and observations.

Cup holders and spare tire are courtesy of Marketing/Design Departments. Engine and suspension are courtesy of Engineering.

I emailed Tire Rack for their advice and here is their reply:
"Thank you for your email. You could theoretically use the 225/45R17 all the way around. You would definitely get the benefits out of being able to rotate your tires. If you are a performance oriented driver, your rear end will be loose at times if you push the SLK hard. That is something to weigh-in to the decision. I typically do not recommend using the 225 all the way around unless it is for winter only. "

Hope this info may also benefit others especially those needing winter tires.

Thats fine but I would not even think about putting 225's on any rim over 7.5 to 8 inches wide.

Hi all

Are the rear rims the same width as the front rims if not how are you going to rotate your tire/rims , you will have to have the tires taken off the rims & then rotate the tire only & not the rims . Are you sure to brought the right car ???

Cheers

Andy

get a set of cheap rims and put proper winter tire for the winter and use what you have in summer. that is what the Germans do in most parts of Germany. better than all-season tires in winter and summer. all-season tires are always a compromise.

That link specifically states for WINTER tires.

And the main reason for staggered sizes(other than looks) is because bigger rear tires induce UNDERsteer(more traction rear than front/aimed at less talented drives), which is safer than OVERsteer. Manufacturers don't like reading about owners driving their cars getting killed because the rear end came 'round(oversteer).

"Think as I think," said a man,"Or you are abominably wicked; You are a toad."
And after I had thought about it, I said,
"I will, then, be a toad."(Thank you, Steven Crane)

Think outside the box!
