New Tires Installed

Just got new Conti DWS's installed on my SLK 230 today. Also had the alignment done at the same time. Total for everything was $792.
The car is so much quieter now, and some of the noises that I thouht might be a wheel bearing have disappeared. I'm very happy with them so far.

Do you get snow in Sonoma? It does snow here, but Challenge doesn't venture out in the winter so I'm more concerned with dry and wet performance. I'm thinking about changing soon from Conti CS3 to DW. Just curious, did you consider the DW?

Michelin PSS has a tread warranty of 30k compared to other ultra high performance summer tires with out warranty. PSS proven to last longer with the truck records of better braking and cornering per Car and Driver, Consummer report, and Tire Rack. Try it, Michelin guarantee if you are not happy in 30 days, you can return it with no question ask.

Even though I have the ContiDWS installed, I saw the review on Car and Driver last weekend that showed that the Michelin PSS take full points for the tire test. Maybe my next set will be the PSS, as the review does note that they are quieter than the ContiDWS.

The PSS is a MAX performance SUMMER tire... the DWS is an Ultra High Performance All-Season tire. Don't try to compare apples to oranges, please;C&D made a big mistake if they did!

Also, the DWS has a 6y50k miles warranty...

I will never take the SLK into the snow, so the next set will be summer tires, and will perhaps be the PSS. Still, four years or so down the road, plenty of time for me to think about it.

That IS a different story(and my comment should have been "aimed" at -K) The DW is a decent tire, but it's not up to the best in the class, for sure. Also, Michelin's warranty is halved if the rear tires are a different size than front...interesting...

Most all tires if different sizes are used and you can not rotate the warrant will not cover wear. The PSS half warrant would be 15,000 miles. The DWS and PSS are very different tires, one summer other all season. one around $216 and other $140 (per Tire Rack for 245x40x17) IMO the DWS is great every day tire and PSS for the perforance use and will wear out sooner as it is a softer rubber.

Hey Galo, you are correct that the C&D article was comparing the Conti DW vs Michelin PSS. I do like my DWS, I just put the article out there for others to find. As I said, I still have a few more years of life on my DWS, hopefully the next version is going to be more awesome than the current. Here's the summary from the C&D article. Hope it is legible.

Everyone used there cars different ways and enjoy them the way they use it. Some have them parked in a garage under a cover and only drive them a few hundred miles per year, some taken them to a track, and some it is their ev eryday drive to and from work or around town. To each their own and only need tires to do what meets their needs. They enjoy the car on their way.

I installed the new Michelin Super Sports (made in the USA, versus France for the PS2's) about a month ago on my rears. I have had conti's before, and still run them up front, but I drive hard and can guarantee the PSS is a "grippier" tire. The new tire is quieter and has slightly more tread (1/32" I think) than the PS2. I do think the PS2 doesn't last as long as the Conti, so it will be interesting to see if the PSS does. Oh, and the PSS is about $30 cheaper than the older PS2 due to it not having to cross the ocean to get here.

Gotcha' -K

You said the tires lasting "years"!? How much do you typically drive? I only put 12k miles on my SLK in the first year, to make the warranty last(I didn't drive nearly as much in Dec/Jan/Feb as I really wanted , but Mar & Apr I got back to normal ), and the "S" in the tread was worn away at in early Spring(Apr/May ~13k miles(again, not knowing if the DWS's were new when I bought the car).

Take care

p.s. Could you list the actual tire name they used for each brand. Some of their time/distance #'s don't match what I've seen on the TireRack site. Thanks

I just found the article online, and there is no way the PSS out-performed the Toyo R1R, in the timed/measured tests, and they didn't even use the BS RE-11!!! What a crock...

Personally, I'd take their ratings, wad them up and throw it in the trash can. Bogus, imo...

Oh wait, I get it now;
From the C&D article; "KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE: We’ve called upon the services of Spencer Geswein for our last three tire tests. He’s a racer and a former Michelin tire engineer. While at Michelin, Geswein developed tires for Ford and for the Dodge Viper. He is currently working on big engines—70 liters and up—for Caterpillar mining trucks. What shocks us is how quickly he gets up to speed and the supreme consistency of his lap times. Plus, he provides clear, concise notes. Geswein’s contributions are a major part of our tire-testing expertise."

What a freekin' joke

I will see you my friend one of this days except in the winter months. One reason I left Indy I end up in the ditch many times on I-65. I missed the rain in spring and Brown County in the fall.
