Winter tyres in UK

Does anyone have experience of winter tyres fitted to a 230K R170 in the UK? Are they noisy, is it worth doing, do they wear well? The car is likely to be my main vehicle over the whole year and we live up steep hills in the Cotswolds which catch the winter snow and frost.
What makes would you recommend?

Not winter tyres but Goodyear Vector 4 seasons on non staggered wheels. would highly recommend them excellent grip in all conditions.

Not the UK, but I (and the previous owner of the car) have used Michelin X-Ice as year round tyre on a 2001 BMW 540i. Not the greatest in rain, but still good enough. Road noise is very low compared to Bridgestone Blizzak LM32 which I have on my 2007 Lexus IS250. The X-Ice's have about 25K miles on them, and are not good enough as dedicated snow tyres now, although still good for a couple of summers.
