The 340 x 32MM AMG brake saga has the end in sight ...

Hi all

As you'll have spotted on a few of the other threads, we've been trying to find an aftermarket alternative to the 2 piece (floating rotors) 340x32 brakes fitted to the early 55's with the 6 pot calipers

(Later 55's had the 1 piece disks due to complaints about squealing, and the only way to get the 'big brakes' was to specify the performance package)

The Reyland route ended up going nowhere - shame, as they used to have a pretty good reputation, so we ended up getting in touch with Tarox.

Tarox have had one of @ZeroZero's disks to reverse engineer (as they didn't offer the part as standard) and they have email back now with prices - delivery dates are still to be confirmed.

So ..

The rotors only are £420 GBP excluding VAT and this DOESN'T include any fixings or the bell..

The full set (pre-assembled) which includes the rotor, bell and fixings is £639 excluding VAT

(VAT in the UK is 20%...)

I've ordered a set of rotors only - pretty sure Andy will be too. If anyone else is interested then let me know and I'll look into getting a 'group buy' organised - As you'll know if you're in the market for a set of these (or just had them done) the Tarox price is almost half of the MB main dealer price for a full set so there is a reasonable saving to be made.

Note that the prices may change at later date due to euro exchange rate fluctuations ....

All in all, a pretty good result, and from a well know brake manufacturer too ...

PM me or add to this post if interested and I'll organise the group buy ...

EDIT ...

The link to the Tarox site page for the disks is here

http://www.tarox.co.uk/?s=SLK55+AMG+...t_type=product

There are several styles available - the 'Sport Japan'style is drilled and grooved, F2000 is just grooved, so the 'Sport Japan' would be the one to go for for the same look / features as the OEM disk (prices remain the same for all of the styles). You specify which style you need in the notes section of the checkout.

New bolts can be had from most auto factors (Reyland also sell them!!)

Cheers
Sean

That's really great Sean - Thanks for all your hard work

If you just buy the discs ( I assume the price is for a pair) where can you get the bolts for the bell to rotor from - It would seem a good idea to have new fixings ?

Thanks

@CPB - I'll do some digging, but they should be available from most good parts outfits .. and yes, the prices are for a pair ...

And to add ....

Delivery time has been quoted at a couple of weeks - I've just ordered a set and that gives me plenty of time to track down a bolt kit ...

Not meaning to hijack your thread Sean. I'll start another if it goes in that direction.

I've been watching this subject since I got my '55 knowing rotors are in my future. But I found myself intrigued with the idea of upgrading the rotor to the early r171 p030 360mm x 32mm rotor since I was forced to lay out the cash anyhow.

I've recently found a machine shop that can make a very similar bracket as what Brembo used on the early 030 to fit the 360mm rotor. This will allow our standard '55 (or later model r171 030) 6 pot caliper to be safely moved out the 10mm necessary to use the 20mm larger rotor. And as it turns out, the larger 360mm rotor is also used on the C63.

They will be CNC manufactured out of 6061 t6 aircraft aluminum and basically look similar to the factory piece (albeit a bit more beefy).

This could be an awesome brake upgrade for someone planning to buy rotors anyhow. Tarox appears to have several 360x32 rotors available, one of which is carbon ceramic like the OE rotor P098 black series rotor is.

I'd need to order about 24 pieces to get the the program written. Cost is expected to be well under $200 for the pair but if there is a strong interest it could be even less. Anyone interested?

Of course it is early in the development of this. And we'd have to verify rotor availability. But considering the 360mm rotor is more common, it's not as if we'd be looking for a needle in a haystack.

If your planning a rotor purchase, and you have the 6 pot caliper anyhow, does it sound like this upgrade could make sense?

The full set (pre-assembled) which includes the rotor, bell and fixings is £639 excluding VAT - missed this part where it says you can get all parts needed. What a deal

They're made over in Italy and shipped over to Tarox's depot over here.

Shipping will be from the UK and is another £5 (added to the total price when you do the online checkout)

Great - thanks Sean for the effort.

Confused by Lioninstreet's comment about the size being 360 x32 instead of 340 x 32.

Were they different size stateside? The performance pack was the same as the early cars non?

I've a 55/56 plate car so assume it's 340 x 32 as you describe?

The 55 brakes are a bit of a story ..

The original (earlier, pre 2008) 55's had the floating front disks with 6 pot calipers as standard - these are the 340mm disks

Due to customer complaints about the squealing / noise from the high perfomance brakes, around facelift time the standard brakes became the solid (non floating) 345mm disks with 4 pot calipers from the C55, with the performance pack (an option) adding the 360mm 'big brakes' and 6 pot calipers if specified.

Simples...

The prices quoted were shipped (plus £5) , so I'm pretty sure there is no import tax ... (will email Tarox later to confirm though)

That looks to be a reasonable alternative then Sean, well done! I was talking with Adam @rgv250ads about his recent front brake replacement at that last meet. His Pagid (345 x 32?) discs look like cracking value at £50 a piece! If I remember correctly he said that with a 2.5mm spacer installed between caliper and caliper mounting bracket to give the correct radial displacement for the slightly larger disc that set up will work also. You might recall he went down the route of having the discs turned down by 5mm but by spacing the caliper you can avoid this. Hopefully he'll chime in if anything I've said is inaccurate.

The discs i used are Pagid "54237" and fit loads of Mercs. Mainly C Class variants, SLK's. they are 345x30 new.
I had 2.5mm cut off the radius to leave 340mm overall diameter. Then re-balanced. 'Bell' wise they are near as dam it the same as original two peice, 1mm different i think. makes no difference to the caliper/disc distance relationships. see pic below for how it sits in the caliper opening.

If people are not fussed about having two piece rotors to look at, Having gone thru this procees my advice would be to use the Pagid 54237 and then have a spacer made up of 2.5mm thickness to push the caliper rearward towards the doors thus not having to machine down the discs to 340mm. This spacer would sit between the caliper carrier and the caliper. made from something like Aircraft grade stainless. then source some slightly longer S/Steel caphead bolts to secure the caliper to the caliper carrier.

the Pagid 54237 look like OEN two peice in that they are drilled and vented. Not solid cheapo looking things!

The Tarox is a very good alternative to the whopping OEM cost. But the Pagid 54237 option is a real alternative too, i'm 500 miles in and cannot even tell what difference there is.

When my front rotors come up for replacement i'm going to fit unmodified Pagid 54237 and get a machine shop to make the 2.5mm spacer required.

Just out of interest how much was it to get yours machined down to 340?

I'm not worried about 2 piece discs and this sounds very good to me and looks pretty standard too.
