Thought I'd finish off and update after opening this thread.
Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. This really was driving me crazy.
You are indeed right about the ABEs in Germany, however......an ABE does not automatically guarantee the rims are allowed on the car.
There's always the small print or "conditions" that must be adhered to on the ABE. I know more about this in German now than I do in English!
For example, the rims I decided to have (MSW by OZ in titanium) are 8x17s all round. No problem if I wanted to run with 205 fronts. 😝
I wanted 225 fronts and 245 rears after the advice you all gave me - thank you 👍 Definitely a staggered set-up.
According to the German ABE for these rims (and most other after-markets) - 225s were not possible on the front of an R170 without rolling the fenders/wings. 😕
Rears - no problem up to 245s without rolling the fenders.
Frustrating for me because I knew a lot of you were running with them with no problems 😠
So, had to buy the rims and the tyres, put them on, take the car the the testing station (TÜV) and cross my fingers they would get approved. I kid you not.
I did pop by with the ABE before hand and asked his professional opinion - he said, "Maybe."
I had no choice.
Long story short - he approved my chosen after-market 8x17 rims with 225 fronts and 245 rears. The gamble paid off. I now have to carry a separate document in the car at all times proving this in case die Polizei stop me.
They have weapons. I'm a Brit. That's a big thing for me 😦
Noticed the following today with the new 225 / 245 set-up:
The car handles like a dream. I noticed a BIG difference on the handling compared to original 205s/215s I had on her when I bought her. More solid and sure on the road. Got her up on the Autobahn today and really noticed the difference. Really.
I'm a happy girl 😄
Another thing to mention is that it is not common to run staggered here. People looked at me as if I was a martian when I told them I wanted to. Interesting, eh?
Anyhooooo, thanks again for all your input. I was doing this in a foreign country, in a foreign language. I really appreciate all of your help.
Have a fab weekend,
