time to say goodbye to my 170 and maybe hello to a 172

well, my car has been back at the dealer since the last week in January and they called and told me that they cannot find the electrical problem that is causing my immobilizer to keep killing my engine. Not the battery, no the batteries in the alarm canister. They contend that it's somewhere in the wiring harness and if they have to start to take the car any further apart than they have the $$$ clock is ticking. I do have a wheel question, I have AMG knockoff wheels (with brand new tires, I mean brand new, 5 miles on them before the latest issue). Are the centers, lug size and offsets the same on the 170's as they are on the 172's? I'm thinking of buying some el-cheapo tires and having them mounted on my old 16's before I trade it in......
Anyone know??

Forget it.
R172 uses M14 bolts, your R170 M12 bolts.
Unless you are willing to drill out the lug holes on your AMG's (bad idea....) there is no way they will fit.

Why not immobilize the immobilizer?

As a practical matter, I've found these devices seldom work correctly and by themselves are the cause of the energy drain on your battery.

Why a bad idea?

I had considered the immobilizing the immobilize too but with just under 150k on the odometer other issues are catching up with using it every day. I've had the supercharger replaced last summer and the clutch is making noise and quite frankly the light out for the tail light is wearing thin. In the last six months the car has had to be towed three times and one other time before. Twice, it just quit. Every light on the dashboard light up and the engine just quit. It was just after the radio just stopped. I was thinking, "this is going to be a long trip with no radio" a few minutes later the engine quit. The second time, I knew what was up and headed to the shoulder before the car shut down. It's not because I hadn't done all the required maintenance, I have.

Because the seating MB/AMG use is a ball/radius. The radius for the M12 lugs is 12 mm and the radius for the M14 lugs is 14 mm. So even if you drill out the lug holes the bolt won't properly fit in the seating. So imagine yourself cruising on the highway and getting overtaken by a wheel, at which point you think: "Hey, I know that wheel.... I got the same ones..."

But apart from that I wouldn't dream of tampering with a rim just to make it fit on something it was not supposed to fit to. There are some things I don't mess with when it comes to my car and one of them are the wheels. Mess with your engine, it could cost you a lot of money, mess with your wheels it could cost you your life.....
I may be too cautious but that's how I feel about it.

I think this car needs to go to the retirement farm for old cars. It has served its time on the road. Also our economy needs some consumer spending, so it's time for you to do your part!

Another idea is you could donate it to Goodwill?

Pete,
Thanks for the information I was not aware of the seating issue, never crossed my mind. Well if I can't reuse the rims and tires maybe just the tires when it's time. I wished I read your reply sooner, I put the original 16's back on and kept the 18's since I knew they wouldn't give me anything for them.

Alas, my 230 has gone to a farm in upstate….dealt it to Carmax they gave me more than twice what the dealer offered as a trade. Really like the new 350 but it was nice not having a car payment. But recently the repairs were almost as bad. Still it was kind of sad walking away. Silly, I know. I may post some spares and perhaps the wheels on the classified pages.
