Why does my SLK230K have same sized tyres?

Why does my SLK230K R170 year 2000 have the same sized tyres front and rear? I bought the car in June 2014 and find the steering 'jittery' at times.

The Mercedes-Benz handbook shows 205/55 R16 91V front and 225/50 R16 92V rear. My car has 225/50 R16 92W front and rear.

Would have the narrower tyre at the front improve the handing or is there an advantage to the setup I already have?

Thanks to all for your help.

Are the tires winter/snow tires? It is often difficult to get a staggered set of snow tires. Mercedes even suggests using the same size tire front and back for snow tires. Supposedly the thinner tire is better for cutting through the snow.

Yes I expect they have been changed in a 14 year life.

There is no indication that they are other than summer tyres.
