Brake Rotor Turning Limits

Pretty good chance, if you drive your SLK much you seen that the stealership fails to refer to the turning spec on brake disk rotors and insists on selling you their $$$ rotors. As much as they cost, you'd think they're made of palladium.

I know it is less hassle to just do a pad slap, and I've done it to extend the life of my rotors on my other vehicles. But after changing out the first set of pads, if your rotors are still thick enough to be within spec, a rotor turn is still much preferable to replacement. Even if the turn takes you to the service wear limit but only cleans up 85%-90% of the rotor.

So in case anyone needs the service specs on the 171 turning limits for the front & rear brake disk rotors, but like me couldn't find it in the threads, here you go...

FRONT ROTORS:

171.473 SLK55 AMG

New: 32mm
Wear Limit: 30mm
Wear Limit for Service: 30.6mm

171.442 SLK200k

New: 25mm
Wear Limit: 22.4mm
Wear Limit for Service: 23mm

171.445 SLK200k/.454 SLK280-300/.456 SLK350

New: 28mm
Wear Limit: 25.4mm
Wear Limit for Service: 26mm

171.458 SLK350

New: 28mm
Wear Limit: 26mm
Wear Limit for Service: 26.5mm

REAR ROTORS:

171.473 SLK55 AMG

New: 26mm
Wear Limit: 24mm
Wear Limit for Service: 24.6mm

171.442 SLK200k & .445 SLK200k without code 952

New: 9mm
Wear Limit: 7.3mm
Wear Limit for Service: 7.8mm

171.454 SLK280-300/.456 SLK350/.458 SLK350 & .445 SLK200k with code 952

New: 10mm
Wear Limit: 8.3mm
Wear Limit for Service: 8.8mm

I am guessing if you thought anyone cared about your posting. I do. Turn if you can and not replace. The problem I am having is finding a web site that converts mm to inch thickness. All convert from mm to length to inches. For example my Slk280 says 28mm which converts to 1in on the web. I know or think the rotor would never be 1 inch thick. Any help?

Or get a caliper that has two scales. Here’s my brake rotor checking tool. Notice the enhanced notching to make sure there’s more than enough clearance for the wear ridge on the very edge of the rotor. Just don’t forget to subtract the extra from the reading or your rotors will measure better than new, haha.
