Hi all,

I'm about to embark on my first mod to my 55. I either buy the Supersprint x pipe for around £310 plus fitting, which i guess will add another £50ish onto the price. I've been quoted £250 for a custom made x-pipe using 304 stainless steel fully fitted.

So, aside from saving over £100, and putting aside any build quality issues with either product, will there be any sound difference? I ask this because I love the sound of the supersprint x pipes which can be heard on you tube. If there should be no reason for any sound difference, I'll probably end up going for the custom made route.

Thanks for any responses.

If you want to do it right, Supersprint.

If you want to save some money and get similar effects, custom job is a way to go.
Myself have a custom pipe and car sounds very good.

Thx for your advice. I'm currently leaning towards getting a custom job done. The main reason is I can get it done next week, and don't have to wait for the supersprint unit to arrive. Worse case scenario, I simply replace it with a supersprint unit if I'm not happy with the sound.

I've got the SS X pipe for nearly 5 years, highly recommend it.
Yes, I've seen your clips on YouTube. Your car sounds absolutely brutal. Whilst I get my x-pipe done, I'll probably remove the secondary cats as well. Should make my neighbours really happy when I leave for work each morning :biglaugh:

Alright mate..

I did the SS X-PIPE and a few months later removed the 2nd cats.

Gofor it, you will love the sound, trust me. On the motorway or diriving normal the car doesn't sound loud at all, almost OEM. However, open it up and it's really loud, sounds incredible.

If you were closer to Edinburgh, could have let you hear mine.

Cheers

Hi there,

Thanks...you've confused me even more. The car is booked in tomorrow to have a custom x pipe made up. I was just going to do the x pipe first, as I could always go back and remove the secondary cats. What did you notice more by way of an increase in sound? Stock to x-pipe or x-pipe to removal of secondary cats? What sort of difference did each stage make?

Thx

I personally think it's more the removal of the restrictions leading into the secondary's as much as the cat's themselves.

One thing to keep in mind is the fact that the new MOT requirements have your local somehow testing to see if the cats are still installed....

Well I've just had the custom x-pipe installed. Sounds awesome! I'm sure I'll be back in a few weeks time to have the secondary cats removed.

At the same time I had some K&N panel filters installed. Yes, I know most people on here vouch for the green filters, but I've never had problems with K&N on the many cars I've used them on.

For all those in or around London, I used EMP Performance in Bushey. Really nice chaps, who took great care of me and my baby.

Glad to hear that it sounds awesome. Are you able to post a video of the sound? I'm sure other SLK55 owners might be interested. K&N, Green Filters... same thing. I've seen pictures of Green Filters disintegrating inside the intake box on another Mercedes forum. I've tried K&N and Green Filters before without any major issues (except I had one K&N filter replaced under warranty because of small defects in the rubber-their customer support is top notch). Just follow the proper cleaning procedure and don't over-oil the filters. I prefer the K&N aerosol spray can over the Green spray bottle, unless they've changed it recently. I might try the dry filters next and see how they are.

I'm also deciding between Supersprint, Magnaflow or Custom. What are the pros/cons? Is a namebrand pipe really worth the cost? Will sound or performance be dramatically affected either way? Thanks!

I can only tell you my experience....which is limited. My car with the custom x pipe sounds very good...the video doesn't really do it justice. I haven't though had it sitting next to one with a named brand x pipe so I can't advise you on the performance difference nor sound difference. I can tell you the build quality of my x pipe is very good. Perhaps someone with more experience will jump in.

I'm leaning towards custom myself. I don't see how the Supersprint system for $850 shipped here to Hawaii would be worth the money over ~$200 at most for a custom system.

How is the loudness compared to stock?

Did you remove the secondary cats as well? Or plan to? I'm thinking of doing both at the same time. Xpipe and secondary cat removal.

I was worried about the car being too loud so I only did the x pipe. I'm pretty sure I'm going to remove the secondary cats as well in the next couple of months.

On cold start, much louder
At warm idle, not much louder but more lower grumble
At revs much deeper and louder

Hope this helps

That's a pretty good description, if you are worried about the noise driving along the highway dont be. On the way to the gym tonight I was doing 70mph (approx) and the sound was hardly different from stock! It's only when you decide to give the car more throttle that the V8 burbles into life but not in an obtrusive way, just an appreciating tone that will always bring a smile to your face. Have the custom pipe done as soon as possible you will not regret the small amount of expense compared to the huge amount of enjoyment from the new soundtrack. :)

This is exactly my experience. I opted to go with just the x-pipe today. The shop I went to had a generic X-Pipe in stock and they fitted that with minor fabrication for $200USD. The car does sound a lot better, but it could go a bit louder before being a nuisance. Unless you're really on the throttle, you can't even tell a difference half the time. I do notice more "burbling" when coming off the throttle though, this I like.

I will likely go back to remove the secondary cats.
