Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. !st let me start by saying my fan speed dial doesn't really click anymore and if I run the a/c for a long time, the dial gets crunchy/squeaky while trying to turn it and you can't tell if your on a speed or between speeds.
So Friday morning everything was hunky dory. The wife drives the car to work. She gets off work and turns on the a/c and fan and nothing happens at all so she drives the car home (5 miles) with the windows open. About 5 blocks from home the a/c kicks in and is stuck on HI no matter where you put the dial. She shuts the car off and the a/c is still on. Dial does rotate properly still, just no matter where you have it, even in the off position the a/c is stuck on HI. So I pulled the terminals off the battery and put them back on this morning and a/c is still stuck on HI even with the key removed from the car and there are no dash lights either.
Common sense says something is wrong with my dial being its crunchy/squeaky while turning the dial and doesn't hardly click into the positions. But the confusing part would be that there would have to be a live wire in there even when the key is off to keep the a/c running, right? Tomorrow is Sunday so I will probably tear off my dash and get the part out so i can hunt one down. hopefully from a fellow SLK'er.

A/C on the R170 is LIN bus linked to CAN-BUS. I'd gamble on fried connectors as well confusing the whole system and preventing the car from "sleeping"...

Was there ever a resolve on this one? I am having a similar issue as well............ No sticky or crunchy bits but dash lights (actually the digital dash readouts) stuck on and the fan doing f-ed up things.
Noticed the dash readout service light is -6xx not sure that matters.......
1998 SLK230.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
