My 98 SLK230 is causing me fits! Replaced battery, checked connections, replaced starter, checked connections, have power, checked emissions control board, looked ok, still won't start!
tester reads no link. Could it be relays, ignition switch, fuses?

A no start condition may develop due to an anti-theft system fault. If the drive authorization module fails to recognize the keys, the engine will not start. In many cases, a new module and keys will be needed to correct this problem.
Get it to a someone to hook up and read any codes but that may be the problem

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Please update your location and vehicle (model and year,ie 2007 SLK 350) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Your profile is NOT updated in your ‘personal garage’.

We want to welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.

I agree with everything said so far. The OBDII port isn't powered unless the ignition is on.

The K40 is always a suspect in "no start" - does your radiator fan come on high too? Search here for "K40 solder"; if you're not handy with a soldering iron find someone who is and have this "free fix" done whether you need it or not.

I have an issue where a) an old key won't start the car, my two other keys do start it, b) with all the keys, there's a loud beep when i turn from position I to II, and c) the fan goes on high very soon after key turned to position II.

I looked inside my K40 relay, but the solder was fine.

Re a), it sounds like the car is gonna start and then it suddenly shuts down at the last second, definitely seems like a failure to recognize the key. Is the only solution to take it into a dealer to have something reset (or buy a new key)?

Sounds like K40, & just cos you think it's fine don't mean it is.

Rad going full tilt (protect mode) & nothing else working is def the K40.

Let the fan run its course (1-5 mins ish) when it slows & stops i bet the car will start

Also, when i turn my kwy i always listen to the fuel pump priming, if it don't then i know its gone into protect mode.
