I just received mine- lousy directions, actually none at all. They provide 4 small rubber dots to stick somewhere between the plexi and the roll bars. On the R-171, the roll bar rears are not flush and the dots won't stick to the curved bars (even using alcohol). Has anyone else bought this product and used it/the dots? Seems like they aren't really necessary. This is my first post, just got a used 2006 350 and pretty excited.

Welcome Phil. Is the brand called Windblox for the rear windscreen blocker? I've never heard of this brand before.

It's the one that uses velcro strips to secure it to the roll bars. I think the "dots" are just to go between the roll bar and the plexi (they go stickey side to the glass), and the velcro straps actually hold it on.

FYI, it mounts behind the roll bars - so not between the bars and the seats, but between the bars and the trunk....

If this is the right one - and I well may be mistaken - I saw one on a '280 in Houston. Be careful, this one had really scratched up the surface of the back deck below the bars where the plexiglass touch the deck surface.

EDITED :

Think this is it :

Can you get a refund? The OEM or Windrestrictor here on the site are the best options. I've had companies like this want to advertise on this forum but the quality can't match Windrestrictor's product so they don't get on the site.

Greetings from Atlanta. People in the ATL group have or had both the OEM and Windrestrictor and both looked better than the one in John's pic. Hope they didn't charge you too much.

Thank you thank you, for the positive kudos, we appreciate you folks very much and yes we are very aware of this ( product) and you are correct sir, this is not a windrestrictor, so sorry about this.

We will be happy to take good care of you though if you are able to get a refund.

Sincerely,
Rebekkah Pennington

thanks for the feedback on Windblox

So the little dots are supposed to be stuck to the roll bar as an option, and really don't appear necessary. The velcro straps hold it flush against them and it doesn't move, so I don't see how it would cause any damage-I'm going to put a small piece of felt between the bar and screen just to be sure. And the screen is held above the deck so there is no reason why it would scratch the deck. No question, the oem is better looking, as is the windrestricter, but look at the difference in price! I paid $97, with a lifetime warranty. I guess I have the same thoughts about the smart top and the bluetooth upgrades folks do. Is it worth $300 plus install just to have the top go up/down w/o holding a button? Or a grand plus to talk on your phone hands free? Not to me. I've done lots of customizing prior cars, but I try to look at cost benefit and in this case, the minor visual differences are not worth 3 or 6 times the price. I do appreciate the feedback, and hope to see some local folks on the road this spring.

does waaaayyyyyy more than just those 2 features

hate to wait the 22 seconds for the top to go up or down? do it at less than 35 mph as you drive!

put your top up or down from over 150 feet away as it uses rf instead of ir signal!

Detailed function description (* = Factory setting)
Function 1 - Product Enable - Workshop/Diagnose Mode ( 0=OFF / *1=ON / 2=NO HAZARDS )
When disabled, the module becomes completely inactive and behaves as if it was not installed. This is useful if you need to take the car to the dealer or garage for inspection or repairs. The module can not even be seen by and does not interfere with the dealer's workshop tester.
Setting 2 disables blinking of the hazards during remote operation.

Function 2 - One-Touch for the roof button ( 0=FACTORY / *1=ONETOUCH / 2=EXTENDED[!] )
When enabled, the center console button operation is enhanced as follows:

Holding down the button in either direction will operate the top as long as the button is held.

Tap OPEN 1x to open the roof completely and roll all windows down.

Tap OPEN 2x slowly (1 sec interval) to open the roof and raise the front windows.

Tap OPEN 2x quickly (like a mouse double-click) to automatically lower windows (SLK) / raise windows (CLK,SL).

Tap CLOSE 1x to close the roof completely and raise all windows up.

Tap CLOSE 2x quickly (like a mouse double-click) to automatically raise windows (SLK) / lower windows (CLK,SL).

Tap in the opposite direction at any time for emergency stop.
When set to setting 2 (EXTENDED), it is possible to turn the ignition off and pull the key out, while the top operation continues. It is also possible to get out of the vehicle and lock the doors using the LOCK button, while the roof is closing.[!] USE WITH EXTRA CAUTION!

PLEASE NOTE: On CLKs model year 2004 the roof can be operated while driving, but not using the "one-touch" feature. This is due to the way the roof button is directly wired to the roof controller on this model only.

UP TO FIRMWARE 3.25:
Programming the max speed for top operation while driving:
While driving at the desired speed, press and hold the phone "end" button on the steering wheel until you hear an audible confirmation. The speed limit can be programmed from standstill up to 35mph (60km/h) on the hardtops (SLK/SL) and up to 25mph (40km/h) on the softtop (CLK).

Function 3 - Remote top operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON / 2=EXTENDED[!] )
This function allows roof operation with the original remote using the RF signal. This works on cars with and without the IR receiver and allows for a much greater range than the close range IR solution.

Tap UNLOCK on the remote 2x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the windows only.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the roof.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 4x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the roof and leave windows up.
Tap LOCK on the remote 2x (in 1 sec intervals) to close the windows only.

Tap LOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to close roof and windows.
While the roof in in motion, the hazard lights flash as a warning signal (unless disabled by function 1). Tapping either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote will interrupt the operation immediately.
IMPORTANT: When sequential unlocking (first driver's door then all other doors) is enabled, one click needs to be added (3x to lower windows, 4x to open top etc.), because 2x just opens all doors.
When set to setting 2 (EXTENDED), it is possible to turn the ignition on and start the engine, while the top operation continues. [!] USE WITH EXTRA CAUTION!

Function 4 - Remote window operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON ) - UP TO FIRMWARE 3.25
This function allows window operation with the original remote using the RF signal. This works on cars with and without the IR receiver and allows for a much greater range than the close range IR solution.

Tap UNLOCK on the remote twice (in 1 sec intervals) to open the windows only.
Tap LOCK on the remote twice (in 1 sec intervals) to close the windows only.
Tapping either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote will interrupt the operation immediately.
This functionality is now (as of firmware 3.30) integrated with function 3.

Function 4 - Maximum allowed speed for top operation ( *0=0kmh / 1=10kmh / 2=20kmh / 3=30kmh / 4=40kmh / 5=50kmh / 6=60kmh) - FIRMWARE 3.30 AND LATER
Setting the max allowed speed for top operation in steps of 10km/h (~7mph). Setting 0 only allows top operation while halted.

Function 5 - Automatic power locks ( 0=OFF / 1=LOCK ONLY / *2=KEY OUT / 3=IGNITION OFF )
This function can be set to automatically lock the doors when driving (setting 1) and additionally unlock the doors automatically, when either the key is pulled from the ignition lock (setting 2) or when the ignition is turned off (setting 3).

Function 6 - Chirp Sound on lock/unlock ( *0=OFF / 1=HORN L / 2=HORN L+U / 3=SIREN L / 4=SIREN L+U )
This function can be set to either chirp once when locking the car (setting 1) or additionally chirp twice when unlocking (setting 2). Setting 1 and 2 use the regular horn, setting 3 and 4 use the alarm siren (requires factory alarm with red "panic" button on the remote fob).
To enable the horn chirps on SLK and CLK, a fuse needs to be reseated in the engine compartment fuse box. Please see the installation manual for details.

Function 7 - HomeLight XL ( *0=OFF / 1=FOG / 2=DIPPED BEAM )
This function turns the headlights on for 30 sec., when either the PANIC button on the remote (if present) is tapped briefly or the OPEN button is tapped once while the car is already open (or CLOSE button while the car is already closed). To turn the light off manually, just tap the button again. Setting 1 activates the fog lights and setting 2 activates the regular dipped beams as the light source.
PLEASE NOTE: On the SL this function always uses all turn signal lights.

Function 8 - Daytime Driving Lights ( *0=OFF / 1=FOG / 2=LOW BEAM )
Enable this function to turn the fog lights or headlights (low beams) on as soon as the engine is started. Some countries require the front lights to be permanently on.
PLEASE NOTE: On the SL this function DOES NOT work and the setting is ignored.
WARNING: This function ONLY ACTIVATES THE FRONT LIGHTS !!! You have to make sure that you still turn the light switch if you drive at night, since this function will NOT activate any rear lights or dash board illumination!

smart top

Jeff, it doesn't mix my drink, what up with that?

Ok, I admit that I hadn't seen all of the addl features with the later firmware updates, and a couple are as important to me as the one touch opening/closing. I'm sure I can find more info by searching, but how easy is it to update the firmware as they come out w/new features (like mixing the drink)? How difficult was the install? Do you know of discount sources for the latest firmware pieces?

The latest version of SmartTop has a mini-USB next to where the Install-Aid LED is located. It also comes IIRC with the mini-USB to regular USB connection cable.

Updating would mean connecting the USB to your laptop after downloading the latest firmware from mods4cars website. Some disassembly of the trim may be required (unless you thread the supplied USB-miniUSB cable and have the USB end hanging out somewhere for easy access, prolly to the rear of the door sill plastic trim).

Wow, that's a great how to DIY link. I've got to admit, with all of the addl features and future upgrade potential, it's looking a lot more like a smart top is in the future. Got to wait for warmer weather but I think I'll go for it. Thanks for the info.

Phil, I've just inquired windblox about their wind restrictor. I would say pretty good price compared to the oem version, but not sure at what expense of others(if any...). Appreciate your feedback after week(s) of usage...cheers...

Please understand that this is just my personal opinion.

I was driving behind an SLK the other day with the velcro straps windscreen. Maybe it was because I'm not used to seeing them, but my eyes were totally drawn to the velcro. They're very distracting to the lines of the headrest. I think also what compounded the problem was that the interior was a lighter color and the straps were black. Sorry, just my .02
