Hello everyone, obviously I'm new here. Just picked up a '99 230 last week for my wife and am having a hard time finding any internal mods for the 111. I haven't torn into the engine but on paper it seems like it's very stout and capable of much more power but the only things I seem to be able to find are pulley kits and ECU tuning. I did find some cams but the price was insane and they wouldn't release the specs so I have no idea how they sell any.

Anyway, to the point, are there reasons I'm not seeing any performance heads, twin screw upgrades and mildly stroked engines? It really seems like there's adequate potential for another 75-100hp with stock drivability but I don't want to head down that road if I'm missing something fundamental.

Also a Motronic question, I haven't looked at the data yet but does anyone know if any of the export regions were closed loop homologation.

It's been a fun week, so far I've done:
CC Breather vented to atmoshpere
Brabus springs & Konis all around
New suspension bushings and mounts
New tires & AMG wheels
Stoptech drilled & slotted rotors all round
EBC Yellowstuff pads
Goodridge Stainless lines
Motul RBF600 Fluid
All fluids / coolant / filters & belts changed
New thermostat for PM
Induction cleaning
Throttle body and oil separator cleaned
New rotoflex/rubber driveshaft coupler & bearings
Supercharger oil changed
CVs re-greased and re-booted
New steering damper

I look forward to lots of actual fun stuff in the future.

Hey Tee51397, Id appreciate if you explained how to change the Thermostat and the Supercharger Oil. Ive been wanting to do that for awhile. Thanks :)

The thermostat is a super easy 10 minute job. Just pull the hose off, undo three bolts (8 or 10mm) pull it off then reverse. If I remember correctly the front plastic cover that covers the camshaft magnet etc. has to be removed to get to one of the bolts. Really easy job for peace of mind. 99% of the time I'm a genuine parts nazi but the thermostat with the three pointed star was around $130 from the dealer and a Wahler with the three pointed star ground off was around $25 from Pelican Parts. Literally the exact same thermostat.

Supercharger oil- there is a bolt towards the front of the supercharger under the manifold, it's kind of hard to get to but can be done without removing the manifold. Anyway, once I got that bolt off I used a 60cc syringe connected to a piece of aquarium air tubing to suck the old oil out then refill. I used Mobil Jet 254 turbine oil.

Yeah, its definitely my wife's car. In fact, the only times I've driven it are on test runs after I've changed something. I think she does appreciate the car stuff I do but at the end of the day really doesn't care either way. I think we've got a pretty good system though - I don't complain about the money she spends on clothes and other "girl things" and she doesn't complain about the money I spend on car stuff.

Another question. Have you ever looked into (or actually done it) taking the baffle off the supercharger so you get more of the actual supercharger whine?

You know, that never occurred to me. I will definitely be looking into that this weekend. I did find it odd that you basically can't hear the supercharger but never thought to find out why and do something about it. Besides the fact that just hearing the supercharger automatically adds at least 30hp (obviously kidding), your ear tells you something's not quite right long before any symptom or idiot light.

I guess Mercedes does it since their cars are luxury and dont want a ricer sound (even though it doesnt sound ricey at all, I ACTUALLY LOVE IT!). And I agree with you. Hearing the supercharger feels like the car just gained so much more power! Haha. Its a great placebo effect. Anyways, heres a link to a thread i was following. It explains how to do it but with no picture and Im more of a visual person. Maybe you know whats going on a can help me out with that.

Here's a post I found yesterday that has some more pictures, but not a complete diy. The thread itself ended up being pretty worthless though.

According to internet rumor, since ours is pre-facelift there may not be a baffle plate like you have so I may be stuck. That being said, I couldn't find the baffle plate in the EPC for the post-facelift either so I may just look for myself.

If you remove the baffle, that would be the perfect time to change the supercharger oil also.

I'll see if I can get some pictures Sun or Mon that would be more helpful. I guess some basic things you may already know are: The bolt on the tensioner pulley is an external torx, I don't remember what size but I'll check but you'll need that to move the tensioner to remove the belt. The airbox is held in place by a couple of pegs that fit into rubber grommets so to remove it you just have to pull up. I think that really covers the unforeseen and not obvious.

Pre facelift do not have a baffle. I've taken my supercharger off a handful of times, have a spare supercharger layin about.. The baffle is on post 2000 (00-04) models only.


The reason no major mods are readily available is people are afraid... search around enough you'll find turbo swap information done on a M111. Because no one makes an off the shelf turbo kit you will need to piece it together and then use a nonstock ECU.



Or you can modify the OEM supercharger to perform better, install ASP pulley, SuperSprint headers, Cams (I have one of the few sets ever made for the m111... hard to find them), straight through 3" cat, brakes/suspension, intake pipe work, larger FPR, few other small odds n ends

They don't I have a 99 and I had to check there is a baffle like peice in the intake however,hope this helps

Yes, there is a change in the sound but I did a lot of mods at the same time, ie. bigger crank pulley + smaller S/C pulley + polishing and porting the S/C and so on when removing the baffle therefore I can´t point out the baffle as the mod who changed the sound.
