Last night on Wheeler Dealers on UK Discovery channel they worked on a 12 year old R170. They bought it unseen for 2000 UKP from an auction site and gave themselves a target of spending less than 800 UKP getting it running correctly to sell.

The first obvious things wrong was the bits of rust at various places and water in a headlamp. On getting in the car for a drive they found the roof didn't work and the ESP light on the dash was on. The breaks were not good and there was a noise coming from the engine. The car also had none standard wheels from a CLK!

The first thing they looked at was the roof and found was a faulty relay so after it was replaced the roof went down but very slowly so bought a replacement pump which cured the problem. He used a stethoscope to locate the engine noise problem as the supercharger with a faulty bearing so replaced that.

The brake problem was traced to a leak on the master cylinder so they replaced that. To find the cause of the error light the called in a man with diagnostic kit who found a faulty relay and just happened to have one with him. Sorting out the rust wasn't really covered as the got a mobile bodywork specialist to sort it out. They also replaced the none standard wheels with correct SLK ones.

Just about all the replacement bits were second hand and came from a specialist Mercedes breakers who I think was Dronsfields who supplied my replacement rear spring earlier in the year. They claimed that the cost of the replacement bits, the diagnostics and bodywork painting came in under budget and they sold it for 3600 UKP. I don't know how genuine it all is as you never see him replacing things that don't cure the problem and sometimes that may be the only way to isolate the problem!

Edd's my hero... I love that show! Who else could have the worlds fastest bedroom set? I wish they would have a website with expanded details on their procedures -- maybe with longer videos detailing all the steps they skip over for brevity -- for those who want to see it all. I'd pay for that....

I do enjoy watching WD - one of the few things on TV I make a point of watching.

My only criticism of the show is that they never or (very rarely) say how many man-hours go into a project.

Most of the projects they undertake are beyond most people. Can't be too many people with a workshop/garage the size of Edd's, nor the equipment he has!

I watched it. It was a good show and I liked what they had to say about the R170.

I just wish they'd spent a bit more time on all the rust spots. I think that's the main issue with these cars and they just skipped over it saying it cost only £150 for a mobile body repair guy to fix it...........I don't think so!!!

It is a programme I make a point of watching and have seen just about every one. Apart from always appearing to identify the cause of the problem first time, the only thing that annoys me about the series is that they don't include Edd's time in the cost of the project when calculating the profit. Its a nice interesting series and they don't try and make it more dramatic by having big arguments, slamming doors and people getting fired like on a similar programmes.

Der Flieger-Wheeler Dealers in UK is on Discovery as I said but is repeated later on Discovery Shed and in a few years may be shown on Quest.

Did anyone watching notice that they may have swapped the cars?
On the drive near the end when Mike & Ed take it for a spin the front wings "lost" the compressor badges.

I agree with the man hour issue if you factor that in they probably loose on every job, also the fuel bill up and down the country, when he collected the car who drove the 4*4 back? Also if you went to a breakers without a Tv crew would you buy a supercharger a headlamp and 4 wheels and tyres for £400 it would cost us over £400 just for the wheels

Good to see around one as it gives you an idea of what to look for when buying.

Car looked ok when finished (minus the Kompressor badge) but I agree, there are a lot of unaccounted expenditures - like the engineers' time and the fluids. It would be good to know exactly what rust was sorted by the visiting specialist. Paint job? Special price for TV if I can advertise? Who knows.

Still, good to see a basic refurb of an otherwise great little car!

Labour and general ownership costs such as fuel not included as it is not supposed to be a commercial enterprise. Look at it as what you might have to spend to achieve the end result and of course what you might expect to get for your efforts.

Wheeler dealer

We love the program but it does make us laugh sometimes, especially at the end when Mike sells the car in his Wheeler Dealer guise, he always gets knocked down on price.
As previously quoted their profit never takes in the man hours worked on the job which for most projects would make it a total loss.
I wonder who the people are who end up buying the vehicles friends of the crew no doubt.

Whatever is an interesting program that does give some very useful tips.R)

It's for hobbyists, people willing to get their hands dirty. Presumably they have to sell quickly for tv production.
