ANother point thread from me.

I just got Cable at home and the speed blew me away.

Whats yours

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Easty Download Speed: 16318 kbps (2039.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Seeing actually downloads like this is probably not going to happen. and it'll totally depend on the route to the test server. I don't think mine is too right, but funny to see others.

Well. I'm on Orange Internet 2mb (Was Wanadoo). My phone lines capable of 8mb and will prob upgrade my ISP when I can be bothered...

Probs thinking of going back to Virgin Internet....if only to get my free wireless router. May as well when the monthly cost is what I pay already.

Actual results from the speed link were varied;

Seattle Server
Download Speed: 559 kbps (69.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 243 kbps (30.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

San Fran Server
Download Speed: 842 kbps (105.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 243 kbps (30.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Los Angeles Server
Download Speed: 1518 kbps (189.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 243 kbps (30.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Dallas Server
Download Speed: 1800 kbps (225 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 244 kbps (30.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Atlanta Server
Download Speed: 1932 kbps (241.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 243 kbps (30.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

How come my Upload Speed remains constant whilst my Download Speed Varies. As far as I was aware I haven't allocated a certain amount of my bandwidth to Download Only.

Because your upload is limited mate by your ISP. so the limit is at your ISP. the limit of your download is somewhere on route to each server hence it varies.

This is the one I usually use-

http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/

It's a UK based server, but I still get faster results going through the States , but the average is around 490KBPS - I'm about 16miles from my nearest telephone exchange, and my signal has to go down some very old copper cable ! (it doesn't make any difference whether I use my wireless router or my next door neighbors Unprotected router:biglaugh:).

Kbps is kilo bits per second. 1,000 bits persecond. 1 byte = 8 bits..

so you can roughly download 128kbytes in 1 second. for reference your avatar image of the heli is under 3kbytes.

But this is all bandwidth.. it's like how many runways a airport as. how many planes can land per hour ect.

Speed is really continuity.. so if i send a msg to you then a msg comes back how long does it take. this would be in milliseconds and again vary for different servers. lower the ms faster the responce. I think I was bored once and pinged(msg) a server in the UK and worked out it was travelling at roughly 30,000 miles per second or in your terminology 3,500 times faster than a 747 can go.

Makes you think how small this planet is compared to the speed of things.

Just about regardless of Site:

Download Speed: 1315 kbps (164.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 228 kbps (28.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Not too bad. I pay $89 a month for DSL, free Nationwide long distance, and almost all premium phone features.

I'm paying for comcast $49 for 6mb. but it seems much higher. ;) and I use skype which is free USA and canada $25 a year.

You can get skype number in any country so people calling you get a local call rate most places int he world and you can call international land phones for 2c a min.

now they also do skype wirless phones. so you just need the wirless router no pc and it acts like a normal phone. but skype is just one VOIP of many.. daym am i off topic?

I think it's still on topic. I've considered cable internet before. I use DirecTV so I think cable internet would run more being that I do not wish to have cable as my tv service provider.

I have:
$90 Directv (lots of boxes and a few packages)
$89 SBC (phone and dsl)

or
$90 Directv
$59 Comcast cable (priced it online)
$25 VOIP

Although it's speed will be faster, I don't think it's worth all the hassle switching from what I currently have. Thanks for the info though.

Yeah your probably right. you'll probably incur charges for installation a watnots which you wont get back for a while. plus max I ever see on downloads are roughly 200-280k so your not gonna great a great increase from what you already have.
