ok then I'm sure I've touched on this in previous postings but here we go..... prices for the 55 seems to range from:

£12,000 (ish) for high mileage (100k+) ones

through £15,000 for average miles (70k+) or average condition

£17/£18 for medium miles (45k - 70k) and/or decent spec/condition

£19+ for pretty stunning examples

do I have this right? Currently looking at one with 4 owners (I'd be #5 ) which seems like a lot until you realise that big engined convertibles are short terms toys. I'd imagine that as long as the servicing is up to date with (preferably) stacks of bills surely these days that's less of an issue (especially if the brakes have been done)?

Is there a premium for red/blue/white with silver/black as less desirable? Are designo interiors worth a premium? Or are both things just down to taste?

Buying from a dealer is having the minor service thrown in as part of a (virtually) non-negotiable price worth the pain of a full (toppy) asking price?

As far as I can tell the colours (and in reverse order of rarity) are:

black
silver
red
blue
white

is that it for the UK?

Apologies for more and more questions!!!

you did not mention model years 2004/5 through 2011 for the r171
That would make a diff on the price :D

The bottom line is if the buyer is happy to pay that is the right price.

The rarer the colour, interior and extras the quicker they go.
Blue was flying off the forecourts when I was hunting.
Few were still available within 48 hours of going on the web.

To get the right price you may have to settle for your second, or even third choice unless you are willing to play the waiting game.

complicated by the fact that prices seem to be creeping up. Like anyone I want to get the best car for the least money and dread paying a dealer £17.5 only to find out that 3 weeks later an identical private sale has come up for £3k less >:D

As always you pays your money.... hence the flood of dumb questions! I'm pretty much sold on the idea of blue or white - both are rare (to the point I suspect that white really would be run out models only and very pricey at that!) which causes its own problems but hey ho and all that

the situation in the UK is complicated somewhat by the fact that late 06 cars are worth less than early 06 thanks to taxation issues. IIRC this even has a slight effect on 07 cars too. I rather suspect that by the time you get to 08-10 this has worn off somewhat but the UK really has a bee in their bonnet about miles on the oddo

Hi All
A large part of the price your willing to pay for a 55 will be on how long are you going to keep the car . If your looking to keep it a long time than go for the lowest mileage / fully loaded 55 but be willing to pay alittle more than normal . If your just having the car just so you can say "yea I had one of them" & change it within two years then a lower price car would be your choice .

Cheers

Prices will be set to creep up further come March.

Getting closer to the better weather and the so called cabrio season.

Closer you get, the higher they will climb.

I can wade in here with some observations being a keen observer of Autotrader and the like even when i'm not particularly looking myself (although I have been for the past 6 months or more).

In the past year, may be slightly longer, I've seen:
1x Mystic Blue (the one at Snippersgate, overpriced imo, told me the lowest they will go is £17490)
1x bright blue (don't know name of colour) - that went within 48 hours and was bought by a dealer and put back on a few days later at £3k more!!!
Several red ones (but not to my liking)
1x decently priced white one (there is one at £21k atm I think) - someone correct me if i'm wrong but never seen a pre-facelift white one, think it was only an option in UK 2008+
2x dark grey (palladium i think) - nice colour, again both facelift and £20k+

You will generally pay a premium of £2-3k for a facelift over pre (bearing in mind they are also newer). Performance pack not everyone knows about but when they do will add a premium for that too.

R172 55 prices coming down to not far off the nicer R171 examples...

Snippersgate have two nice examples.
The Blue is the same colour as mine. It is 2 years older, 20,000 miles more and a £1000 more than I paid privately two years ago.
I very much like the Black face lift with the black and grey interior, black interior is bland.
Brakes on the face lift are a lot cheaper and you get paddles and a better nav?

First thing is set a budget now you have looked around and be the first on the scene.
Dealers always phone up sellers and offer to buy for cash at reduced price.
You can buy things now using bank transfer but I suggest you send £1 first to confirm that all the bank details are correct.

If you are buying a 55 I would not get one without sensors or Air scarf.
The auto climate looks nicer but shouldn't detract at resale, cd player in glove box renders the glove box useless in a car with little storage (it's a V8 >:D) you can use your phone for music now days etc or ipod.

Seat bolsters can get damaged if buying from a dealer get them fixed. Also check the door shuts (all models) for seat belt buckle damage.

When you find the one you want......buy it

I'm glad that your experiences mirror mine! That being said I'm actually overjoyed I never saw the light blue as I think that that would've broken my heart!! :crying:

Snippersgate is also IMO a little pricey but I've pretty much decided black's not me (look amazing clean but get dirty at the drop of a hat), everyone and their dog has silver (though I can see why, easy to keep clean and good in hot weather!), flat red doesn't work for me and it looks like white is too expensive! :crying::crying:

edited to add... I've just seen a pic of 'Mabel' and all of a sudden red looks good again.... I guess it's all in the angles!

rightly or wrongly these are being talked up big time at the moment and are now fetching more than they were 2/3 years ago :frown:

don't drop the hat :D

I haven't washed mine in months
just detail it daily, that takes about 15 mins....you have 15 mins?

Look at that shine :D

If you live in the UK and its your only car 15 mins of detailing is completely pointless as soon as you pull it off your drive its filthy again :crying:

My last 4 cars have been black and they are a pain to keep clean, especially in winter. I do love a clean black car but I'm sticking to my g uns this time and not getting black!

My first choice would be Mystic blue, but i'm looking for facelift and don't think i've ever even seen one. Second choice probably Palladium Silver (like dark grey) - again, pretty rare and when they do come up they are out of my budget. 3rd choice is silver, i know they are the most common but I think they look better in facelift. Honestly though why did more people not order these colours from new!! :frown:

PS why is 'g..u.n..s' blanked out? >:D

Doesn't work quite the same in the UK in Winter with the sheer amount of rain and the salted, gritted roads - the spray on damp roads is often absolutely stinking. My new (to me) black 55 AMG is needing a full wash after 2 days and 100 miles.

Still, I think the black looks superb and most of the other colours are too rarely seen to find one easily. All the best Waylander on your quest for the perfect colour

On the subject of price, I think I was very lucky to find mine locally and a bit of a bargain. 2005 model in black with 68000 at £12,995. So far I cannot fault it. Engine is a smooth as butter, paintwork is 95% great with just a couple of small blemishes, same for the wheels and everything works fine as far as I can tell. I'm a happy bunny. I'm glad I dived in headfirst for this one. The quicker you go for one, the longer you'll be able to enjoy this awesome car. :D
