I have a Becker Audio 30 radio head unit (integral cassette player). It's dead again. The display works, I can click all the buttons and see the station frequency, select any CD, but no audio.

Past summers, it would work unless it was a humid day. Under humid conditions, the radio would get staticky. Now there's no audio at all.

I'm currently on the 2nd radio with the 3rd one to replace it soon. The dealer ordered one and said it would take at least two weeks for it to arrive from Germany.

For a low-mileage car that lives in a garage, three radios in ten years seems a little unusual.

Anybody else have problems with the Becker Audio 30 radio?

Sorry for the stupid question but did you check on eBay Germany before going via the dealer?

I replaced the tacky aftermarket CD radio that came with my used SLK by a refurbished MB for a fraction of the cost of going via the dealer.

In any case you can always ask the owner of the site car-radio.de he might be able to help.

There are lots of them on Ebay that are inexpensive. Many have been replaced to get iPod, Bluetooth, etc., capability. I have one napping in my storage closet.

I still have a little time left on my used car warranty, so the dealer is handling it. A new radio lists at $1700 which seems incredibly expensive. It doesn't even have built-in SatNav.

I'm just puzzled as to what's killing these radios. Are they (Becker Audio 30's) that fragile?

Once I'm out of warranty, I'll go the route of the suggestions of repair or used replacements from eBay. Thanks for the ideas.

Yup, you nailed it, that's what I was thinking when I wrote the original post. I have fond memories of the late 70's early 80's era (though I really like the early/mid 60's stuff).

Thanks for posting the video link - cool!

BTW: I got my car back from the dealer today. They did a great job replacing the radio (an incredibly easy job if you have the radio removal key). The holdup was the warranty company taking so long to inspect and approve the work. Went for a 2 hour moonlight drive tonight and had a blast driving back roads while listening to the radio and cd's. The dealer gave me a C250 Coupe loaner while waiting the 2 days for the warranty company. The car was certainly comfortable enough, and the 1.8L 4-cyl turbo out-accelerates the M112 3.2L V6 once the turbo kicks in, but it takes a full second for that to happen; I'm thrilled to have my SLK back as nothing beats the smooth instant acceleration of the V6 (besides another V6, V8, V10, V12).

We are all getting older. The buggles 25 years later:
