I found this part listed on Germany eBay, but even with translate, it doesn't throw any light on what it is! Can anyone ID it from the part number somewhere?

The partnr refers to a telephone console.
If you do a search witk telephone console R170 you stumble across this page:

Mercedes Benz R170 SLK Console Telephone Grise Origine B67880441 SLK230 SLK32 | eBay

From the pics, especially the one that shows the manual of the piece, gives you a good idea what it is.
Partnr is different but shape is more or less the same.
