Got stuck the other day in a remote place with only 2 options for fuel

91 and E10

I know E10 is 94 (ron ) so without a better choice i went for it. Toped back up with 98 as soon as i could.

But i started thinking what do others put in their SLK's

In Australia we have 91, 95, 98 E10 (10% ethonal) and E85 (85% ethonal )

I usually use 95 or 98 depending on whats at servo

(Brand does not really make a difference as most fuel comes from the same source i am told )

P.S went fine with E10 by the way even with foot flat to the floor

Thanks for the move, only looking for Australian answers as i dont think fuel from other countries neccesarily relevant, but if people want to comment glad to hear from them

If you want to hear from them, i will move a post back. BUT....we already have threads on this subject (what gas do you use) and we do not need another one so I would remove yours, so I suggest leave it for Australia member answers only.

I go Puma 98 usually with the 4c/litre RACQ discount. I've used Shell and Caltex 98 no dramas but found when I've used BP 98 I get a lot more soot on the rear bumper.

I use 98, any brand. I know it will run fine on 95, but I don't do many kilometers so the additional costs doesn't bother me. I can't tell the difference between the brands. I've never used E10.

I researched this as best I could when I had the 1998 pre-facelift SLK230 Kompressor like yours, and concluded that normal Unleaded 91 was fine.

Whereas my SLK320 uses minimum 95.

Overseas reviews and sources are confusing as what we call normal Unleaded is sometimes called Premium as they have/had a version that was 87. Some countries use 95 so commonly that it is the normal grade. And different countries use different terminologies, RON, Octane and others that have different definitions and lead to different “ numbers”.
I’ve stated this in a vague way as I don’t want to get into an argument about whether or not I misrepresented what some other country does.......

I was surprise that a supercharged engined ‘230 was ok on 91 ! But careful reading of the fuel label terminology ( a bit ambiguous if I remember, ) the Australian version of the owners manual and suppliments, and also contemporary Australian Road Tests, I confirmed to myself. It ran fine.

You should not take my word for it, but check my logic.

Higher rated fuel may not make a difference with respect to fuel economy or power.
Although the car has a oxygen sensor, unless the engine control module is designed to reset engine parameters to match the fuel grade, it won’t do much good.
I recall the Astra from early 2000 was designed to run on 91, but gives about 3% more power and similar economy improvement on 95, but for an increase of about 12-15% fuel cost increase at that time.
And extra power is really only of use if one is using all of what is already provided, and who can notice an extra 3% anyway?

Fuel economy of the SLK230 is better than the V6 and the 91 fuel is often now 15-20% cheaper. A nice bonus for the ‘230 if it gets lots of use.

Around me several retailers have dropped 95 and only sell 98, raising the cost even more. So many cars need 95, what are they to do?... They’ll pay more and buy the 98. Very cynical strategy from the retailers.

So a long answer to the question.
I now recall it is spelt out on only one page of the manuals and it’s not where I expected.

Thank you @Pictor very interesting and yes the price diference is amazing, at one place it was over 50c per litre between E10 and 98, and that adds up quick.

Although mine is not a daily drive so i didn't worry too much about price

I have heard all the arguments re E10 having less "power " than 91. But..

It does have a higher RON which reduces pre detination over 91.

As for milage i have used E10 and 91 in other vehicles and I find E10 gives the same fuel economy as 91 in terms of my driving stlye and profile.
(You only use the extra power on acceleration so if most of your driving is cruising it makes no difference )
(p.s i have never noticed any power differende anyway )

The only other difference i can find at this time is sulpher levels (higher in 91 than 95) so im off to see what i can find out about sulpher levels in E10

My li'l Fiesta runs much better (smoother) on 95 than 91 (95 is specified). I haven't tried the 320 on 91.

I read an article in the press lately (might have been the ABC) that Australia in general is behind other OECD countries regarding the reduction of sulphur levels in petrol.

Yeah read the same, can't find it now and i think you were correct about it being 0n ABC.

Sulphur same in 91 and E10 - upto 150 parts
95 and 98 up 50 parts

Interesting is that you should not use E10 if car is NOT daily drive as it absorbs moisture. Any way the artical tells all

I use 95 in my SLK 350, and 98 if there's no 95 available. I can't see the need for 98 in non-turbo cars. The SLK runs perfectly on 95. I only use E10 in my 2017 Holden ute and it runs perfect on that, but like you I would only put E10 in the SLK in an e,ergency.

Just a quick update,

went away this weekend and burned through 2 tanks of fuel and as suggested by @Pictor i ran 91.

Ran just like normal And i saved some coin

Maybe in the short term - I can't see 2 tanks making an immediate difference.

I'd stick with what the manufacturer recommends. In my R172 350 (in Oz) - I always used 98 and only from busy garages and the big boys ( BP, Caltex etc). I reckon the few cents saved on petrol won't offset what could be a big repair bill.

Pointless using a RON above what the manufacturer recommends. - no added benefit (lots of discussion on this across multiple forae) and using below recommended, will give reduced performance and possible long term issues.

I was on a trip to Ireland last year and could only get 95 for my car - there was a notable difference (worse) in responsiveness.
