Following the DIY broomstick thread ....http://www.slkworld.com/diy-section...ection/13187-diy-r171-holding-roof-open-broomstick-modification.html#post186393

I thought it would help to post videos to show the sounds we get with our roofs. It should help people judge if they have fair wear & tear, or if their roof need hospitalisation!

Here's mine, its 6 years old, 35k miles on the clock. You can hear the seals un-sticking as it opens, a touch of gummi pfledge should sort that.

I often get a groaning noise as the trunk opens but that hasn't happened this time, probably because its been run a lot in the last few days. It can be painful if it has not been used for a while.

I can hear a definite creak when the B pillar is at 45 degrees (towards the rear) when closing, and when it passes the vertical on opening, just as the screen starts to rotate

Also bear in mind this is indoors using a cheap mic on my stills camera so the clattering noises are exaggerated! Shot using my right big toe on the button, balanced on my left foot, with my left hand up in the air holding the camera. Got it all in shot first time!

What does your roof sound like?

It has got noisier over the years, but its been slowly creeping up, I've not noticed a sudden change.

I must admit I was surprised at how much groaning was going on when I replayed the video. I don't really notice the noise when outdoors.

You've got me worried now! I'll pop round to see Ram so we can compare sound effects. I'll also compare mechanisms to see if there are signs of wear.

The roof on our 2001 SLK320 had been perfect for 13 years and 11 months. Then, yesterday it did not unlatch from the windshield. :( I used the special wrench (in the right rear trunk panel) and jiggled the fitting that is under the plug in the front center of the headliner. That did it, and the roof works again.:)

I followed that with applications of silicon spray into the fittings at the top of the windshield and into the latch assemblies at the front edge of the roof. I then applied silicon on all the rubber moldings. It was quiet before, but now the only thing you can hear are the windows going up & down and the pump running. The sounds from yours are frightening!

I would clean up all your moldings and lubricate all latches, etc with silicon spray. Use a paper towel to keep the spray off other things (windows, seats, etc). Rub the moldings with that paper towel and you may clean off a whole bunch of crud.:tu:

Hint: you can stop the roof in the half-open position to access all the moldings, latches etc. But, if you turn the ignition switch off (or even to position 1), the roof will flop closed again, or go into the trunk. So, you have to work with the ignition switch in position II.

Note: My notes are 2001 SLK320 specific, but I don't think newer SLK roof mechanism characteristics vary that much.

Sounds pretty normal to me, and seems to work smoothly just looking at the video. You can lube the joints and latches and put Gummi or the Mercedes specific lube on the rubber seals, but there is not a whole lot more you can do to change the operating noises.

It would be interesting to compare the noises a CLOSED roof makes while just driving down a bumpy road. That is something I notice a whole lot longer than the noise the roof makes during the short time opening or closing.

IMHO: There's too many variables -- microphone type and quality, sensitivity, bandpass, location and orientation, room acoustics, noise cancellation and compression settings, etc -- to make effective youtube comparisons of all these noises. However, it's a great idea to have some comparison information. My roof pump seems fairly noisy compared to this, but it raises and lowers at the correct speed and without any apparent problems.

An in-person comparison would be much more interesting.

My 2005 and 1998 SLK's produce reasonably similar noise.

Damn Jeff you're faster than a speeding bullet......

Note to self AGAIN
I MUST CHECK HOW OLD THE THREAD IS
I MUST CHECK HOW OLD THE THREAD IS
I MUST CHECK HOW OLD THE THREAD IS
I MUST CHECK HOW OLD THE THREAD IS
Ho-Hum

Although.....it's still interesting to hear it, whilst not frighteningly noisy there do appear to be a couple of groans and clanks I don't recognise......:surprise:

Errrrrr......
Mmmmmmmm....
I think I may have heard of that somewhere, is that what we used to have before we got the new "red" view? I seem to remember being way behind the curve on that one too......
....don't worry about me Jeff I'll just plod along in my own little world here in ye olde thatch cottage land.
BTW we had a very exciting "General Election" here last week for the "Mother of Parliaments" did you hear about it in the New World?
