as it says - I finally looked at an SLK55 and had a good poke around.

Loved

wheels it came with (http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/S2YAAOSwNyFWdsuW/s-l225.jpg) VERY nice IMO.
interior was nice (liked the movable head rests!) heated seats, airscarf, black/burgundy leather).
nicely stamped book

not sure

black... ok it's obsidian which I guess I could live with but it showed up every smear and finger-print - not sure if that would drive me nucking futs >:D
seemed too quiet

didn't like

some bad stone chips (face it, it's going to happen on a car like this and this age!)
headlights starting to fog (I know scrub with toothpaste!)
roof was squeaking as it went up (again I'd imagine no biggie a little lube)

bad?

fan-belt squeal on start-up for a few minutes
7 owners (call it 6 as at least 2 were related)

didn't drive it as I'm not ready to buy just yet AND it was stuck at the back of the showroom. All in all nothing to put me off - but it does leave me with a little bit of a dilemma.... I've been offered £16 for my truck but I feel that most decent SLK's are knocking on £17.5+ it's the age old bail now and have cash waiting for a private sale (ie less ££ than a dealer) or buy from a dealer (but obviously more expensive than private). The biggest issue for me and private is that they seem to come up so rarely! :crying::crying:

As Jeff has already said, that can be addressed. Check out the link in my signature for info and videos on the x-pipe (sounds even better in person than on the videos)! >:D

Keep looking, and I'm sure you'll find one that you like... it can sometimes take a little time to find a good one though. :tu:

:
What size are the wheels? Are originals available?

How many miles? Stamped book no substitute for reams of invoices detailing parts replaced and date/mileage.

Roof operation should be smooth and take 22 seconds. The odd squeak probably means not used recently and yes, a good lube should sort it.

Belts often squeal a little in the cold and damp months and disappear in Spring, especially if not run for a while.

Standard exhaust quiet standing still - totally different on the road. Rev limiter prevents a roar in neutral.

You really have to take it for a drive - and quite a long one at that!!!

This is very true. Get it on the road for a long test drive, put the roof down and find the nearest tunnel!!

I had a test drive two days ago and bought it straight off. 2005 R171 AMG, lovely car, 68,000 miles with FSH and loads of bills, almost pristine paint, from a local small specialist sports car dealer for £12,995. They are out there.

For me: too many 'not sures, not like, bad' statements...

Whilst there aren't many, take your time and find the right one... 55's can be expensive so a warranty from a reputable dealer is probably worth the extra pennies unless you are happy to 'DIY'... but nothing you noted is impossible to fix though :)

You absolutely must drive one, your heart will tell you if it is the right one :)

oh - please don't misunderstand me! The car was 'ok'... the problem is I want any car I buy to make me smile like a halfwit when I get in, this didn't. That being said (and in all fairness) I'm not 100% on the idea of black but given my budget I've got to go for the best I can regardless of colour (flat black would have been an outright no regardless though). Definite fave colour is blue - seems like that one in Snipersgate is still hanging around but it's too much (and the fact that it's still there after 7 months means that it is overpriced - or he's forgotten to take it off!) even when my truck does go :crying:
