I installed the SmartTOP myself today with no issues. I also checked using the White Rabbit DIY because it was one of the threads I read. Lots of good information.
Only two notables from my install.
OMG so many torx screws!
The speaker connectors are a bear, my finger tips will never be the same. Or my back for that matter...
Did mine Sat. Was much easier than I thought it would be. Didn't even disconnect the speakers. Electric screw driver really does a number on those Torx screws. Only problem was stuffing all that wire and those connectors back into the various slots in order to get the plate in place. Also, took ALL the screws out so I had a bit more space to work. Did have a "Stupid" event. Couldn't get the programming set up to work. Turns out I needed to have the doors shut. Oh well. Works as advertised. Really nice product.
Did mine this morning, it took me about 90 minutes, it worked as advertised. I have not tried programming it from the steering wheel just yet, I set it up in advance using the USB connection and the PC software to get the all functions in the modes I wanted.
I finally installed my SmartTop today. I used the manufacturer's super clear programming instructions, and this longread on this site to make the installation a bit more OEM.
I installed an extra fuse, and to make it suit on the only open slot left (#42) I just put in a hot welding tool to adjust the inner shape (the OEM fuse holder, part no. A003 545 13 01) needs to be widened a bit on the centre side. Since the Tyco plug is made from polypropylene (which is a thermoplast) it nicely melts if you touch it carefully with a welding tool.
I loooooooooooooooove the result! Thank you guys for taking the time to spell out the installation steps!
Great job!
I don't have my blinkers flashing. Calls too much attention to the flashers and distracts from the 'show' taking place!
Don't forget to set your max speed!

I set the max speed to 50km/h; don't plan to open/close with much more than 30km/h but I like the slack. I can tell you I had one BIIIIIIIIIG smile on my face when taking the car for a ride tonight (Airscarf gently on) and closing it just before I entered the garage.
I'll check these blinker settings tomorrow... Thanks for the tip! :tu:
and don't forget based on your setting, you can one touch the close, stop the car, get out, walk away and it finishes the show as your in the house or walking to a store. don't look back
G'day, Elgreko1965,
I had the Aussie Smarttop agent install mine as I bought it from them, and they were very nice and helpful.
Their installation fee was very reasonable

It was so little extra on top of what I expected for the unit cost, it wasn't worth me bothering to install it myself, even though I was confident to do it and I was reluctant to let anyone mess with my electricals. They said the R171 is quicker than R170 so it won't be much.
Yeah yeah Smart Top smart Top woo-hoo we all love our smart top. I am still wanting to know if anyone has been successful at using this product in CONJUNCTION with Mid City's Remote Starter. I've only owned the car for about five months. These threads go back years. I simply don't believe I'm the first person on the planet to try and install both mods on an r171 (mine is a 2005).
Somebody? Anybody? Come on Ferris Bueller I know you're out there.....

Well Jeff quite frankly I am glad to hear that, since one possibility is of course there is an underlying problem with my car. Part of me feels like I deserve some sort of medal of achievement but the biggest part of me says oh suck it you big baby. You can't always get what you want. Somebody call a Whaaam-bu-lance already. Give this baby a bottle...not a bad idea I think I will.
