I have just bought a carsoft 7.4 multiplexor plus all the cables etc which is supposed to do this. I haven't had time to check it out but will try at the weekend. You also need an old XP laptop and it must have a serial port as you can't use a USB converter. I have the software on an old Fujitsu laptop which if fine except the battery lasts all of about a minute!!
I let you know if it all works as expected.

Hi Jeff,
I have an icarsoft i980 which is very good on my 2006 S211 E class but as near to useless as makes no difference on my 1997 R170. It reads basic engine DTCs with an OBD converter cable but other than that nothing else.
Cheers
Bob

thanks guys now im totally confused but borris my r170 is a 2002 and it does say in the description that the i980 is for 2001 and later so maybe thats why its useless on your 1997 r170 just a thought what do you both think is it worth a punt?

1997 port in engine compartment

your port (muskey67) is probably under dash (USA Driver's side)

1997 has old connector

your should have newer port/connector

Apologies if I have confused everyone here. It was the reference to Carsoft rather than icarsoft that sent me in that direction. I am sure that the facelift R170 is one of the models listed on my icarsoft 980. I will plug it in tomorrow and check to confirm but if it is I am sure you'll be better off with that as it is a pretty good piece of kit for the money. It helped me sort out my parktronic and transmission issues on the S211. As Jeff noted I need the carsoft as I only have the round connector under the bonnet/hood and not the 16 pin OBD2 one under the dash.

Just a quick FYI Carsoft and ICarsoft are 2 totally different companies. I had the Icarsoft and it would not pickup the vario roof. I then got the carsoft direct from Belgium and I couldn't get it to read anything even with the tecs working on the computer through Team viewer ( they take control of your computer ) I got much better customer support and followup from Icarsoft they are supposed to text me when they can get into the roof.

OK so after changing my coolant (a chance to play with my new Nielson vacuum fill tool) and changing the 20 year old gook that passed for oil in my diff I finally got chance to try my newly acquired Carsoft 7.4 kit.

Frankly the documentation is appalling in a hybrid of German, Flemish and probably Walloon. For my 1997 R170 230 SLK there are lots of things it can't access but I think in all cases that's because they don't exist on my car. The good news is that it can access and clear faults in the the variomatic roof which somewhat counter intuitively is designated VD! (Sounds very nasty!!). In my case there was a code stored due to low voltage when I had alternator issues. I was able to clear this and some other fault codes. The only error I couldn't clear so far was one on the PSE. This is odd as I don't seem to have any PSE issues I am aware so I'll have to investigate that further.

I hope this helps.

I also checked my i980 and I can definitely see the variomatic roof in the menus for the facelift 170 but have no way to check this actually works.

Cheers to all

Bob

Just for additional clarity on my R170 Carsoft 7.4 seems to be able to access and reset the following:

ME (Petrol Engine)
ABS (Anti Lock Brake System)
AIRBAG (Airbag system)
Instrument Cluster (Instrument Cluster)
EGS (Electronic Gearbox Control)
AIRCO (Aircon/Heating)
PSE (Pneumatic System)
VD (Variomatic Roof)

Other things are probably available too like PTS (Parktronic) if you car has them fitted.
