Hello everyone!

I would like to know if some of you have already changed the factory radio by a Becker one?
I bought on ebay a Becker Indianapolis Pro (7955) that has the exact same connector on the back (except for the ISO connector on the top of it).

But when I connect it, nothing happens. I can't start the "aftermaket" radio. I checked the fuses behind the two radio (aftermarket and original) and even switched them. The original MB AUDIO 30 Japan works, whereas my Becker don't.

Is there something I need to change on the connector ? Is there also a way to test the Becker out of the car just to see if it's working (the seller said it was working, but I didn't tested it for the moment...) ?

I am wondering if the SLK320 has an "illumination" connector behind the dash... perhaps it would be the solution to my problem?

Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks !

Have you tried search?

I'm sure there are several threads on how folk did this, although not necessarily that unit.

Yes ! But as you mentionned, not necessarily the 7955 unit.

I already looked at several topics... this one first of course:
http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-class-diy/16093-slk-aftermarket-radio-installation-instructions-pictures.html

I also found the service manual for MB AUDIO 30 and for the Becker Indianapolis pro so I could compare the two wiring diagram before posting here.

I also opened both of the radios to check the components...

Anyway I will continue to check every single piece of my radio to find out :)

not on my SLK, but on my s210

I swapped the audio 10 CD for a mercedes audio 30 Sat nav, and then swapped that for the Becker Indianapolis. The only thing I had to do to make the audio 30 work, which was right pinta, was find the speed signal wire under the sill on the lhs front, tap into it, and run that to the appropriate terminal on the connector block. W/out that the sat nav won't be able to work out what's going on.:nerd: ( natch, I had to rout and mount the sat aerial as well, but in comparison, that was a poc)

I'll bet the SLK connector block is the same, and 'missing' a speed signal feed. You can probably find the wiring diagram for the becker on the web, if you can't, let me know and I'll hunt it out for you.

You should have the unit springing into some kind of life, regardless of whether the speed signal feed is there or not. you will need ignition to stage 1 though, that is the case on my SLK. Not on my S210. go figure.:|I'm guessing it's fritzed somehow. you can test off the car, just note which terminals is +ve and -ve and feed in appropriately.

I'm happily using an Indianapolis so can probably help. It works fine. Happy to help if you need some.

This item is a bit ould but maybe this is an idea.
On the Becker sticker with the terminas connection. You can try to wire it up with an ext 12v power and see or it works.
The ill terminal is to make the display darker by swopping the ill on the display. This will not interupt the power.
I have a Becker Indy in my EU spec 230. Changed nothing to the wiring, plug, play.

Sorry one more,

If there in no speedsignal the unit must come on if you put 12v to it.

Google ISO connector slk.

Hang on everyone.....

Note:
Socket A below refers to the power and control plug of the two ISO connectors for the head unit.
Socket B refers to the loudspeaker connections

@Jo3y25 - Have you checked the fuse on the radio to see it's not blown? That may be a very simple quick check. You can get a harness adapter if you need to wire up the Indianapolis to a bench power supply. All you need is the chassis / 0V (socket A pin 8) and +12V signals (socket A pin 7) to see if the radio lights up - press the On button top left to turn the radio on and off.

Regarding the navigation, according to the manuals I have (PM if you need a copy) the Becker Indianapolis and Indianapolis Pro have TWO signals for 'speed':
  • The Speed Signal GAL (on Pin 1 of socket A) which gives a volume increase option as the speed of the car increases. This is used by the NAV too.
  • The Reverse Signal (on Pin 2 of socket A) which is tapped off the signal to the reverse light.
The Becker manual for the Audio 10 (again, PM me if you need a copy) shows Pin 1 connected to a speed signal - so that should match the two Indanapolis variants above (and did for mine). However, the Audio 10 expects a 'Diagnostic and Configuration' connection on Pin 2 of Socket A. This is confirmed on Web ETM whereby according to the wiring schematics for the R170, Pin 1 of Socket A is fed from the Vehicle Speed Sensors but there isn't a colour code shown for the cable (I think it's Green/White). Pin 2 (the Diagnostic pin) is a Yellow/Green cable connected to a "Data Link Connector". I've not got time right now, but I'll dig out a more complete spec when I can.

The photo shows the pins connected in Silkie - it's not the clearest photo as I needed it for other investigations but nevertheless it shows the two pins connected. Sounds like you'll need to get a signal from the reversing lamp and connect that to Pin 2 on Socket A to fully feed the navigation function.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks guys for your help !!

Unfortunately I did not have a lot of time to work on my problem last months... But I found the solution.
Like Slkeric said, I had to buy another connector to test it at home.

I powered it up following the same connection diagram as yours savcom (+12V and GND) and ended up with no power at all.
I tried to follow the current on the main board and tested everything, until.... I suspected the EEPROM chip was not working properly.

So I decided to desolder the EEPROM chip, copy it with an adaptor et resolder another one bought on f.arnell. And now? It's "working" !!

The only problem I have now is that the GPS modul is showing "GPS MODUL ERROR" ... I guess I will have to solder some other things ... I will investigate more next week !

Thanks again guys for the time spent ! :)

Goodmorning,

To get it going you need to wire terminal 4 and 7 to 12v power and teminal 8 to ground.
Tem 4 is the constant + 7 the ingnition (switched).

Sorry,

After reading your post again I understand that you got it going.
GPS MODUL ERROR means no GPS antenna.
If you plug in an GPS antenna it will display WAIT, searching for GPS signal.
