My 320 was built with the base level stereo, no Bose amp fitted and no rear speakers or phone mic etc. Since then someone has fitted a cheap kenwood head unit which us rubbish. I am now working on upgrading the stereo but having some difficulty in that all threads I can find seem to focus on systems with the Bose amp. 馃槥
So... given my setup, will the speaker still be 2ohm? If so i guess they will need to be replaced 馃槥 i am looking to retro fit some in the rear as well but I'm not too bothered about using an amp, so could just run some cables down the centre console. Any info on this basic setup would be very welcome.

Thanks

It depends on how involved you want to get. Putting speakers in the rear wont really make much difference. You'd get a little more volume but there really isn't room for the high frequency part of the equation (remember, bass is omni directional and higher frequencies are much more focused). Tell us more about the Kenwood head unit. If it makes decent power and has a sub out, I'd recomend replacing the door speakers and running a flat powered sub under the passenger seat. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-TS-WX130DA-Compact-Active-subwoofer/dp/B078PHCHSW/ref=asc_df_B078PHCHSW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312157286633&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8947654605026296462&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019514&hvtargid=pla-453756117805&psc=1

The Kenwood unit is this one: https://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/rec/usb/KDC-W7044U/
main reasons for wanting rid of it: no bluetooth, horrible to use (buttons/knobs are just awful to try to use while on the move) and the sound is terrible.
I know the sound is likely down to the speakers but cant help feeling that there is something very worng with te built in amp on this unit.. I have read that running 2 Ohm speakers will damage the amp, hance trying to find out the pec of the base level speakers :)

I have seen some cheap kits on ebay that say they have Pioneer speakers with adaptors to make them fit the R170 doors.... Not totally sure about these, gut feeling is they would be a waste of money? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-SLK-Front-Door-Speakers-Pioneer-car-speakers-Adaptor-pods-300W/132235793539?epid=23018202006&hash=item1ec9de1483:g:h20AAOSwPpZaTjFV

I have already bought a new head unit: https://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/deh-x7800dab and been carefully checking the supplied loom connector etc. luckily it works out this is a straight plug in to the SLK loom :) BUT there are warnings in the ,manual about not running 2 Ohm speakers - hence my questions :)
I know this head unit is quite capable but I am not an audiophile and the thought of messing around with amps etc just seems over the top... If i do go for an amp i would want it to be a simple and invisible as possible.

I also found when i removed the kenwood unit that some previous owner had been a real cowboy behind there! :( there was a Denison Gateway 500 fiber optic input, spliced really badly directly into the loom, which was just floating about banging around inside the center console and not actually connected to any output at all! Needless to say, my SLK will be better cared for from now on!

My advice would be to start at the two car plugs and loom and strip everything out that is between the plugs and the head unit. Be careful if the previous owner has crimped anything when you remove it cos you can get insulation displaced potentially causing a short as wires get exposed. Look at the photo. That's what I had to start with..... :surprise:

The article I wrote that @M4rCu5 referred you to is thorough but you do not need to go as far as I did. Just stick to the speaker upgrades and the head unit. That's fine. I would recommend, however, when you select your speakers, that you go for 4 ohm speakers with a marked sensitivity of 90dB or higher. That way your head unit will be able to drive them properly. You will need the pods (Connects2 CT25MC16) which are perfect. Also, make sure the tweeter is no bigger than 1.25" / 3.2cm so that it can fit in the 36mm housing.

Happy to answer questions along the way - as @M4rCu5 says, this is my territory. 0:)

Thanks new head unit now fitted. DAB antenna and microphone mounted on windscreen behind the rear view mirror, so hardly noticeable, 馃檪 managed to return the loom to pretty much factory spec. Haven't tackled the speakers yet but a quick test the sound is a big improvement over the kenwood unit. Still not great and very noticeable distortion with speech. So now looking at speaker upgrades.

You're doing well so far.
Mobile version is a bit crap tbh, switch to desktop view if you can. Using generic mobile emoticons gives you nonsense such as this - &#x1f642 - and I'm not 100% sure but you might have to have so many posts to your name before you can edit.
Oh and hit the 'like' and 'thank you' buttons a lot (not available on mobile version) .. keeps ppl motivated ;)

I checked out the specs on your new HU and I would only run it at really low volumes until you swap out speakers. Your correct in that 2 ohm speakers don't have enough resistance for your hu and you risk thermal damage. I'd also guess that your distortion is a blown speaker or two. When you pull them out, if you push on the cone, it should move freely. If it feels like sand paper, the voice coil is burnt.

Also, I'd still look at adding a sub. With the HPF on your head unit, you can get all of the low end out of your main speakers (for example under 120) which will add a lot of clarity. Some people are seeming allergic to subs as they think it means widow rattling rap. The main reason for one is to make the whole system more efficient and clearer.

Hi,

8" Active in 10" Enclosure like this baby

I also added 6.5" Component Speakers behind seats with the tweets on up near the headrests, and I put the same component pair in the Doors, my front MB Speakers were FUBAR and distorting, also added the R171 / W203 Steering Wheel now with fully working buttons and paddle shifters >:D

. Nice install looks sharp! How do you like tweeters behind you? Considering that myself.

Hi,

They really sharpen up the sound when travelling at "exocet" speeds with the roof down.

I'll see if I can find a pic exactly where I mounted them, as it would take a million words to explain ;)

Here you go:-

The Tweeters in the Doors stayed in the same place as stock MB location, I just took them out of the housings they came with and fitted them in place of the MB ones
