Sorry Waylander and nimbusgb...your classifieds really did catch my eye but one is really out of my budget and the other is the wrong year for me.

I'd love to buy from someone here because I can see the care and dedication taken by you guys on these cars!

I've seen a couple now and I can see my original £12.5k budget was way too low for the quality i'm after. So i am moving up to £13-14k

Is it common to not have a stamped service book? One had one fairly well filled out and one had nothing... i was told it was all digitally recorded. I guess that's fine if its main dealer but there were 9 dealer receipts and the last two from specialists. How would you properly keep track of those without a stamped service book?! ...stamps are kind of like used car currency, no?

I'm based in Surrey and would also need a recommended service place. I've seen Star Motor Service in Caversham and HSC (Hampshire Service Centre) mentioned. Also had Mercanix mobile service guy from Hurst mentioned as an trusted option.

Thanks for all the help so far!

In no particular order

1. For sale threads are not editable by the poster. If you need a change made, please contact a moderator.
2, Thread should include price, pictures, contact info like email address. Try to not post a phone number. If you have less than 15 posts, you won't be able to reply by pm as newbies won't be able to pm the seller either since they also probably have less than the required 15 posts to do so.
3. Why are threads uneditable? In case of a dispute, the seller cannot go back and say something was X when it was Y, because the seller changed it in his favor.

They started doing digital service records a while back.

You can still keep a stamped book should you wish.

The digital record can be obtained from a MB dealer.

But condition is key.

We bought a 230 with records.
Turned out to be a money pit.

This list:

And getting datacards (Needs the VIN):
Vehicle Data Card - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Go a long way to a successful purchase.

Make sure you double check the roof/seals.
Some fixes are easy and cheap, others not so much.

And do this before every test drive:

And use all manual (stick and tippy tappys) as well as all autobox settings.

Good hunting.

(Carry on saving whilst looking and more cars come into your range)

Amazing thank you! Great info.

Have been checking the MOT histories of all the cars i'm interested in and the front suspension seems to be a common fail. Particularly the Lower ball joint and control arm bushes... i can kind of see that for the age of these things being a fair one but more than a couple have had failed coil springs... is that a common concern?

Springs fail on the SLK's. It's a non event in fact you can barely tell from the suspension but there is a distinctive rattle. To replace a spring costs around £170. ( Parts and labour ) and takes a couple of hours. I've just done one of mine.

Mine has just gone through MOT with no suspension issues at all at 89000.

I'm open to offers. She really is the best one around at the moment!

I might just take you up on that in January sometime!

Saw a disappointing one at a dealer in Sussex... typically, "fully stamped book and A1 condition" really means bad spots of respray, Horrific oil leak, Recipts only, old mismatched tyres (newest one flat) and front rotors were toast ...nicely refurbished wheels though and new rear discs totally justified the £16k zero movement asking price :surprise:
