Going to look at an AMG SLK 'approved used' car, would using an RAC type pre inspection be overkill or a necessity?

Thanks in advance

Neither, but its a help.

use the buyers guide on this forum. It's far, far more comprehensive and if you can get the car on a ramp ( local exhaust / tyre place for a fiver? ) a good poke around will tell you a lot.

Well one expensive AA inspection i know of a while back missed on a Lexus 250 that a o/s rear wing had been replaced / repaired poorly .
Laquer was coming off and start of corrosion forming due to bad repair work .

So i would say No
It all depends on how good there eyes are .
Id take someone who knows there slk or a forum member who is close by .

If its a Merc dealer, AMGs get a two year comprehensive warranty so you don't have to worry too much.

Id be very careful on that term two year warranty they use termology general wear and tear to get out of it at my main dealer . :surprise:

Read small print on it .

Run a diagnostic with a Xentry on it.
Most places will refuse to let you near the car with Star/Xentry. They recon you are trying to clone a key to steal the car. ( That's the excuse they use )

Spend a hour (do a half hour before without the dealer/owner) looking around it, don't like it, look for faults and panel gaps. Check everything works, seats, air con,DVD,turn steering lock to lock, are the wheels just over sprayed to make them look ok.
When they say they have something done, ask to see a receipt for it.
Is the engine cold before they start it? There will be a slight whine when started from cold but it should stop after a short time. The standard roof remote is rubbish and probably doesn't work, this is normal.
Two keys?......
Check the Service paperwork, you can get a service stamp with work still pending. What do the MOT's say? Read them.
If you do buy it, smile as you drive away

True, there are things that aren't covered (mainly wear and tear items and trim) but its pretty comprehensive.
In addition you've got a six month statutory warranty (Consumer Rights Act 2015) - if any faults develop the vendor has to fix it as they are deemed present at point of sale. After 6 months the onus is on you to prove it was an existing fault.

Just checked and a Tier 1 policy covers wear and tear items:

"Wear and tear is covered up to 100,000
miles from the date of first registration if it causes
a mechanical or electrical failure of the insured
vehicle. Includes consequential damage (as detailed in
clause 4.4.16 on page 18) of covered parts, subject to
standard exclusions in 4.1.2"
