Hi there folks. Thanks for the add.

I am Luke from England - located in South Leicestershire on the border with Warwickshire.

I found my way here after spending the weekend on Google starting to have a look at SLKs. I have been recently looking at a 2-seater with open top thrills and having previously owned an MGB GT and much more recently a Mk3 MX5, (and for real thrills a Triumph 955i Daytona) I was slobbing around the Internet point at mid-engined cars - Mk3 MR2 / MR Spyder or MG TF160s.

I was properly in love with the MG (enough of a patriot and romantic to make me smile) but I hated the driving position. So...

...there I was looking at a budget in the £5k GBP area when two friends independently said 'why not look at the SLK - or maybe a a Boxster?'.

My much better half and I are planning a road trip this summer from northern Spain back through the Pyrenees and across France so I want something which lets the sun in but will leave us fresh at the end of the drive.

Having started to dig I am hoping for an R171 as opposed to an R170. The 200 makes a lot of head sense in terms of economy and I love the idea of a supercharger - but having seen some of the GoPro footage on YouTube I am a bit smitten wth the 350 Buck Rogers type rocket ship. I fear that if I go fir a 200 I will be left with a nagging doubt - probably due to being a 'resting' motorcyclist and always looking for bhp/ton.

Key gaps in my knowledge from a UK perspective are consumable costs - particularly tyres and I need to do some digging into the 200 / 350 debate. Maybe I will look to the 280 - but I need to read more.

Thanks all.

Luke

Hi and welcome from another part of Leicester.

I did the same thought process you did back when I got my 280. I like the sound of a V6 so decided to go with either a 280 or 350, and the 280 came up at the right price at the right time.

Depending on the year the car tax for a 350 varies. Some were 295 and some 500. The 280 was 295. I also thought the 280 would be more fuel efficient, but once you set off that's the last thing on your mind. I managed 29 on a run last week but most of the time I don't even check it. When I do it's usually in the low 20's.

Tyres - premium are around 150 each. The avons I got with it were around 80. The rears on now were put on by Mercedes when I was skint. They managed to find some reasonable budget ones for 55 each. I haven't noticed any difference, though I don't drive like a racing driver.

The 280 has enough umph for me, but if I were looking now I'd probably be looking at a 350 as like you said, you'll always be wondering.

Hello Luke and welcome from Mersea Island Essex to this brilliant forum. As a few others have already said why not join us on Sunday 5th Feb http://www.slkworld.com/united-kingdom-region/409274-first-slkworld-meetup-2017-sunday-5th-february-warwickshire.html where you can meet owners of different types and variants of the SLK. From my own perspective, I really enjoy my SLK350 which is the best and most powerful car (305bhp) I have ever owned and it did not cost me a fortune to buy. I do have ambitions to eventually get a red or white SLK55 but I will probably also keep the 350 as I love it so much.

Hi Luke, hope you find a car that you like soon! Take your time and look a few first (Use The Force).

The meet this weekend will be a great opportunity to compare models, options, etc.

If you do decide to come I'll probably say "I've been expecting you young Skywalker!"

Cheers
Col
