Tyre sizes?

I have just purchased a 2003 SLK200 R170 It has cheap tyres on and I am thinking of a new set of premium tyres. The tyres on are 225-45-17 both back and front I can find no reference for this. The wheels are good so want to stick to 17" if possible but will this alter gearing? Are these tyres standard fit? HELP!
