Hi
I am a newby from down under Melbourne, and have acquired my 1998 SLK230
Which I just love.
I do have a problem with the reading of my external tempreture. It appears a few degrees higher that what it should be and was hoping that someone can advise how to replace this part which I believe is not expensive
Thanks
Ceccy

you mean the external temp probe? is it in its holder or has it fallen down and near the radiator causing an elevated reading?

I could tell you on a r171 but don't remember r170
the probe can be reached from the rear of the grill usually by going through the wheel well
which side is your probe on?
in usa it is on the driver's side
so do the opposite
turn wheel to the right so you can remove a couple of the screws from the wheel well
then u can get to the probe and make sure it is in its holder
you should be able to see the probe from the front before you start

post 8 has a pic of r171 location

from my link above

underneath the car there is a panel, like a windage tray, or drip pan. It is held on by just a few 8mm screws. The panel drops down after this and you can then see behind the bumper to replace the temp sensor. You have to remove this panel whenever you do an oil change, unless your is missing which is sometimes the case. It will not harm anything if it is missing, it will just not be as aerodynamically efficient and may create slightly more wind noise then if it was installed.
