Hi
I have an R170 320 (2000) with an auto box 722618 and am looking to change the filter, pan gasket and electrical connector. Anything i need to look out for?

Agree with what has been said re leak but consider changing the magnet and of course you will need a new cap to refill it because the one in there is going to break when you remove it.

Thanks guys, i have the parts on order so hopefully will have the job done soon.
I am also going to do a transmission flush at the same time as i have only owned the vehicle for 1 month and no history of a transmission service.

Good. Not surprise there is no record because MB says they don't need service which as far as I am concerned is nonsense. While maybe less demanding service and long life, changing it can be as important if for no other reason to see what is in the pan but new oil is good to do.

Hi,

As a retired Auto Transmission specialist I fully agree with this statement !!

There is no such thing as "Lifetime Oil" etc ...................
You see, to the likes of MB and BMW etc their idea of "Lifetime" is 100k Miles :frown:

I regularly used to see these transmissions destroyed at 100k to 150k miles, but the ones that we had religiously changed Fluid Filter and Connector Bushing at 80k mile intervals all went to at least 300k miles.

2 of these were hard working Vito Minibuses, "twins" with 1 number different on the VIN, both ordered and built at the same time for a local fleet owner.

I finally stripped and rebuilt them at 330k miles due to a Coverter L/Up Shudder, the actual Transmissions guts were like new, I simply changed all seals, sprags and clutches as a matter of course, also replaced the Lock Up Valve in the Valve Block with the Sonnax kit (this valve wears at very high miles), and fitted a new Converter ................. They are now at around 500 k miles and still going strong :wink:

I too have a leaky auto transmission on a 2000 SLK320 and having read this thread and some of the links I want to carry out an oil and filter service and replace the connector, hopefully this will stop the leak!

I know the transmission takes 8lts +/- 0.5lts but I need to flush out remnants of the old oil.

My question is how much AFT do I need all together - including flushing out old oil. I think 11-12lts should be enough for this. Can someone please confirm. Just want to make sure I have everything available ready for the job.

Yes 12ltrs will be enough, empty and refill 3ltrs at a time

Well that didn’t work! Got all set to change the oil, filter etc... up on ramps, dropped the oil and with gasket set at the ready... 1st bolt I tried undoing snapped!!!!! Filled it back up with oil and drove it straight to the garage. 10 days later (because they couldn’t do it sooner) and 3 more snapped bolts and she’s back... just waiting for the bill now!
