Hi. Took my '00 SLK 230 (86k) to an auto box specialist recommended by my regular garage for a transmission diagnosis as although working Ok it just felt a little clunky/jerky every now and then, and a few months ago there was one instance of it not changing up which was resolved after 'turning it off and on again':smile:, and around the same time it had jumped out of gear once. So imagine my reaction when i was told by the mechanic it was completely dead and needed replacing! I asked him how he knew and he said there should have been a particular reading showing which wasn't, which told him it was dead and tried to explain to me what was happening inside (I know NOTHING about this stuff). He quoted me 1,800UKP to fix and was also charged 90UKP for the diagnosis which took less than 5 minutes! Does anyone have any thoughts/advice on maybe trying to source a replacement box and getting someone to fit it as a more practical/cost-effective alternative or do I just have to suck it up?! I live in SW London, UK. Thank you

Following from what Avel Du said, the first thing to do is to pull back the carpet in the passenger footwell, remove the plate (three nuts) and check for the presence of transmission fluid leaking from the transmission. It's also important to check the transmission fluid level.



If nothing there, then it's important to get the results of the scan the transmission specialist got (or didn't get), ie, the results of the scan. If he doesn't remember (or similar response) I would get a second opinion. Or, dare I say it, buy a fault code reader :grin:



I've never needed to work on the transmission (yet?) but from all I read on here, these transmissions are very reliable mechanically and most of the problems are with sensor and electronics.


By the way, what do you mean by "it jumped out of gear"? It slipped into neutral?

The only time a 722.6 (your transmission) is dead, is when you hear bad noises.. other than that, it's still solid and probably has an electrical issue, which is usually just 3 things:

1. Transmission conductor plate
2. 13 pin connector (dirty)
3. ATF wicking through the wiring harness and into your TCU (trans control)

I agree with above, let's see what those readouts were!!

maybe torque converter has broken up and put metal swarf into the box ...but am only guessing.

they guy might of looked for pressure and temp readings ect on his tester and maybe drained some oil to inspect

I thought it strange that a supposed Auto Specialist said it was "dead" ................................

Guess that must be "Fault Code 7" after all ........................

Thanks for the responses and apologies for the 'expletive deleted'

I've just had a look at the invoice which I just threw in the car and he's written 'codes 146/147, transmission needs replacing'

I've just a cursory glance about these and can't see anything pertaining to complete and utter failure but quite a few references to leaking/low ATF etc.. but shall do more research. In response to someone suggesting he'd taken a sample of the oil and checked it for debris, he did nothing of the kind, as I say he plugged the reader in and 2 mins later called me over to say it needed replacing. Will be checking level myself and all your other suggestions, thanks again guys

well now we know he didn't drain any oil its the first places to start. give it a filter and fluid swap has to be worth a try. bit odd to say a gearbox is done for on a 2min code pull ?
