The dealer where I bought my used SLK advised that never under any circumstances should the up and down operation of the top be interrupted. He said the mechanism would "lose its code and have to be reprogrammed". Since the interruption would cause "confusion" as to which direction it should be going. As I write this I realize how stupid this sounds. The manual advises that to clean the rear window, stop the procedure while opening or closing for maximum access. Is there any credibility to what this clown told me and are there any recommended guidelines to follow when opening or closing the top. Thanks !

All I know is this. (R171)

I have stopped the top movement at least a dozen times, usually propping it open to treat the seals and rubber components. It has never caused a problem.
