Curious -- have you ever had anything fly into your car, or hit you, while you were driving with the top down?

Nope. And this is my 6th convertible...

When I was just out of college, I DID have someone dump a drink in my seat while I was inside the local pub and had neglected to raise the top. But I don't think that's what you're after...

I was able to drive through a fairly heavy, sudden rainstorm with my top down last year without a single raindrop falling inside, as long as I was moving.

I'm always afraid, though, of some a$$ flicking a cigarette butt right in front of me (once it hit my windshield), but judging from the rain experience, it's very likely to just fly over the top.

I'm scared of bums and potential crooks, sometimes they get real close like they want to get in. And it would take time to put the top down in front of them.

Hmmm, there are places I simply don't drive with the top down, but then again I try to avoid those areas regardless if I'm driving the F150 or the SLK.

The closest "hazard" was before smarttop - wife was in a hurry, got pissed at me wanting to put the top up when we parked. When we got back, a seagull had left at least half his body weight in crap right across the top. Wife has never complained about taking time to put the top up since!

I drove a CJ7 ages ago, and got rained on, sun burned, cigarette burned (on a newly recovered rear bench), mud covered, you name it - bet it was a bit more designed to take it. I had a D90 a few years later, and it just wasn't the same - felt obligated to take good care of it...

At any real speed nothing is going to enter the cockpit (short of a moose of course!) because of the screen angle and the airflow wanting to throw things toward the trunk lid, stuff can get in from the rear of the cockpit from airflow coming from i think down the sides of the car (same flow path as the windblocker protects against).

I was pretty amazed the first time I drove in the rain with the top down and didn't get wet at all. This was at highway speed. By the time I had to slow down the rain had stopped.

On another note, my wife was driving on the highway and a huge sign came off the side of a bus in a very high wind. It blew right over the top of the car. Had she had the top down and it hit, that would have been very bad. In this case, it just didn't hit her by luck. I think the think was far too big for the car's airflow to do anything about it.

This happens to me a lot around NYC. At least every week a bum comes up to the window with their cup asking for money. One time it happened when we were at a drive through ordering food.

At first it bothered me that they stood right next to the car or tap on the window. We would try to ignore them and they would hold signs or make comments.

The last couple years, I keep some spare change in the ashtry and when they come up, I just roll down the window, and drop a few coins into their cup. After that they go to the next car and have never been harassed further.

I think if they feel that you're scared of them, then they might try something.

I've never had anything fly into the car. I have however stopped a few bees and other flying insects with my chest while riding my fatboy. In case there is any doubt, I'm here to testify that a bumble bee at 60 MPH leaves a bruise.

I've drove in rain quite a few times with the top down.. I don't stop if it's not coming down hard and I'm on the fast moving road.

Think about it a little.. Rain falls at max 20mph, so if your doing 60mph for the 1 1/2 ft above your head it's going to fall 6" into the cabin. Then add the airflow going over the car. then you also have a rolling vortex in the cabin created by the air moving over the car. wear a hat and you'll rarely feel a sprinkle..

regarding some other debris, As long as your not stopped its highly unlikely something coming towards you will have enough vertical speed to come in the cabin.

One thing that is certainly traveling fast enough to get in is light. so slap some sun cream on :)
