Hi, I have been looking for an SLK for about a month and the choice is a little overwhelming.

Really don't know which way to go. It'll be my daily (12000 approx a year)

Sensible head says 200, although I have just put a very small dep. on an "05" 300, 68k, silver, red seats...

Which is the sweet spot in the line up of 171's and which should I avoid?

I want heated seats, auto and less than 70k miles. What other extra's are essentials? Is not having the airscarf a deal breaker?

Apologies for all the questions, my head is spinning!

Thanks

Steve.

Apologies I assumed it would state where is was.

I'm in the UK. Have a budget max £7000.

age 43, (yesterday) married, self employed, amongst other vehicles, my current daily drivers are a little mx5 (when the sun is out!) and a Celica Tsport when its not.

I'm looking for something that puts a smile on my face, like the MX5 does, while looking a little more stylish.

A lot of the UK cars i'm seeing are in the south of England, which is 200+ miles away. Planning a roadtrip this coming weekend to view/buy. It would be nice to know what questions to ask before I visit.

I'll avoid the 350's then, thanks for the tip.

There are lots of affordable 1.8's but i'm wondering if they would feel a little underpowered compared to my lightweight mx5. That's why i'm looking more at the 2.8 or 3ltr.

The smartroof mod looks like its the first thing i'll install once I own one!

Thanks.

Steve.

don't avoid the 350s, just be aware of the issue. does not affect later year 350s and NOT all 350s, even 2005-2007. but the engine range is large because they don't know when the issue started or ended.
I had a 350 in the range and was never affected
previous owners of 350 might have had it addressed or again, never affected

Steve

I recently picked up a SLK200. Whilst not the fastest car on the block, the 1.8 turbocharged engine emits a nice sound under acceleration and, is no slouch. Obviously, the 280's, 350's and 55's will offer more grunt. I doubt there are any 55's worth owning in your price range but, will be lots of R170 and pre facelift R171's about on autotrader.

I went for the SLK200 as, it is a second car to compliment my 5 door A250 4matic and, I did not want high running costs on tax, insurance and petrol. My A250 is much quicker than the SLK200 but, the SLK will still get you points on your licence with ease

My priorities were heated seats (wife insists on a warm butt), reasonable milage, everyhting working and, a good service history.

Enjoy your search and, hope you find the car your after. Bear in mind, when you do, you will also fall head over heals in love with the car. It is impossible not to!!!!

Hi Steve,

Welcome from the Wirral.

Totally agree that trying to get the right model, accessories is mind blowing.
You're looking for the perfect fit.

Odds are ANY will model be pretty darn good at bringing a smile to your face.
As long as you do the usual research.
I didn't do enough and went into 'SHINEY!' mode and bought a neglected car.

If your looking at going 200 miles south to get a car have you had a look in the Midlands and Manchester areas?
That's where I've spotted a few of my potential next purchase.

You'll also find this list useful when you go to see any of the cars:
http://www.slkworld.com/general-discussion/68666-new-used-vehicle-pickup-checklist.html

Also, there's a healthy UK regional section, with meets in several areas of the UK:
United Kingdom Region - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum
Might not be a bad idea to join one of the meets and have a chat about what to look for etc.

Good luck solving your dilemma. But remember, it's not a bad dilemma to have ;)

Thanks, not adverse to a meeting. Both the camper and bike I own have meets.

The car I have put a deposit on this one. Price agreed lower than listed.

Mercedes SLK | eBay

The guy claims to have only done 2000 miles in the 2yrs he's owned it. Too many toys!

I bizarrely like an advert with not enough info, I think it puts a lot of people off and you can sometimes pic up a bargain.

Looks ok, from the pics he's sent. More personally than is on the listing.

Any comments?

HAVE the car checked by a body shop TO ENSURE it was never involved in a wreck that was not reported to insurance. An experienced body man can tell even if the car looks flawless if it has ever been repaired.

Hi Steve, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

Lots of great advice already posted above... and I presume that you're satisfied with why the car was off the road from sometime prior to August 2014 through to October 2015? I'm no expert, but I'd want to try to check that it wasn't in an accident prior to Aug 2014, that someone then took a while to repair.

Good luck, and I hope all works out well, whether it's with this SLK or another... :tu:

all good points.

What do you guys think about the price? About right?

Can get a full RAC inspection for £249. Might be worth doing that this week???

Unless anyone lives in Kent, who knows what they are looking for?

Happy to pay fuel and some beer tokens for your trouble.
