Okay guys (& girls): I own a 02 SLK32 AMG with 80k. So, my husband and I are divided on what to do re: tranny fluid/filter/gasket. He says don't touch it - if I'm not having problems leave it alone. I say, it has 80k and what's it gonna hurt. So, I thought I would throw the question out there to see what the consensus was. Also, he is an at-home hobby mechanic. We have a shop with a lift. Is this a project that could be done at home? Mechanic is quoting $345.00 for the complete service.


Also, as a sidebar - my driver's side valve cover is leaking. Mechanic says I should do both Left & Right b/c if one is going - the other will probably go any day and while their in there . . . I'm thinking that's just a line commonly used to generate more money for the business. He also made reference to a "breather" in the valve cover? What's this and does it need to be changed?

I search through the forums and try to educate myself as best as I can but sometimes I just can't find that exact answer I'm looking for and, hence, this post.

Howdy!

Tranny should have been done a while ago. Have you a maintenance manual? If not, I can link you to one.

valve cover leakage is a known issue on the amg and they have done mine twice and though it was under warranty, both sides should be done

Most of the logic behind "do both at the same time" is that the labor to get to it to do the work is the same - hence you don't get doubled up on labor costs.

On the transmission, I don't know enough about the 5 speed in the R170 to say - I'll leave that to some of the R170 experts. That said, I've never heard of changing transmission fluid being a "bad" thing...

I was able to talk with an MB repair guy and this is what he told me. He does recommend that I have the tranny serviced, however, MB did not "recommend" tranny service through years 1996 to 2004 b/c they were using synthetic oils and figured it didn't ever need to be changed. However, MB has since changed their minds from 2005 to current and recommends tranny service at 40000 miles. My owners manual simply states "Regular automatic transission fluid level checks and changes are not required. For this reason the dispstick is omitted. If you notice fluid loss or gear shifting malfunctions, have your authorized MB Cener check the trans fluid level." Thankful for these forums!

So has anyone done the tranny service themselves? Easy, Moderate or Complicated?

i had mb do mine at 40k at $299.95

trans service is a 2 on a sclae of 10. replace the filter and gasket and while your there replace the electrical sending unit housing . known to fail and wick fluid up the cable to the tcu and fry it.
the valve covers prolly arent leaking. its the breathers attached to the valve covers. it uses a rtv sealant no gasket. a 1 on a sclae of 10 all told with fluid and all less than 200$ for everything.

So 320 Dreamer . . . what the heck is that breather "officially" called. You happen to have a part number? Is there a way to tell if the oil leak is from the breather and/or the gasket (i.e., oil seepage from different areas)?. Mine seems to be leaking right at the front of the valve (closest to the front of the car). I appreciate the input from all!!

offically its called a breather! best way to find the leak is clean the entire area. then spray the area with soft and dri deodorant. thats right! it will dry white and absorb any oil and turn black. the breather has no gasket you remove it from the valve cover clean it degrease it and apply rtv black and reinstall.

320 Dreamer: Pardon my ignorance but do you have to remove the valve cover to access the breather?
no. if you look at the backside of the valve cover you will see another cover on top of the valve cover. its held on with 4 bolts. thats the breather. the 2 smaller torx bolts are very fragile and will break with more then 10 ft/lbs of torque so be careful tightening them.remove the small black hose and check for brittle rubber or cracks. this is the breather tubes that go to the t/b to reburn oil fumes. remove the breather clean both surfaces and apply the black rtv to the breather. liberally. let it set for 10 to 15 mins then reinstall. let it sit for 24 hrs to cure and fire the motor up and check for leaks. all done ez peazy!
