Out in the rain driving the wife's SLK230 this weekend and kept breaking the rears loose in the rain coming off a stop. Me I like it, her, scrared the you know what's out. Running Dunlap's and they're getting to within a few thousand of needing to be replaced.

Now on my XK8 I run the same big fat tires I had on my Vette, Firestone Firehawks. LOVE THEM. But this little SLK is different. I'm asking for which tires others would get for an all season performance tire. Current sizes are 205/55r16 front and 225/50r16 rears. Our choices are:

Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 V rated
Yokohama AVID ENVigor V rated
Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season V rated
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval AS V rated

Input please.

I should have mentioned upfront; wife's car and she DOES NOT want Michies. Don't ask me.....

I have added Continental ExtremeContact DWS to the list however.

If Michilen's are out then Goodyear Eagles on that list.

Hint if it is Mrs car and you are wanting a little more tread life move away from a high speed rated tire.

Michelin Pilot Sport (any series; though Sport Cup is massive overkill) or Continental Sport Contact or Extreme Contact.

Hey every one, been some time here. Tires? I'm here in NY and a few years ago I needed all the tires and the guy I deal with does the rims, tires and ground effects for a MB dealer. I asked what he thought on what tire to put on my car. I picked the best as listed in other post. (Not sure if about the results today) But under his breath he said that General's Exclaim, but now it's G Max. If you do research you would see that race car drivers were switching to this tire at the time I purchased the tires. Name over performance? I will take that ramp any day on performance over a name. And the cost $130 a tire installed! I love these tires!

When I lived in Houston with my Honda S2000, there where 2 tires that I really liked.
Sumitomo HRZ III or Toyo T1R, but have not owned A/S tires so I can't really help there, but I did like the Sumitomo tires I used.

I'm glad to be getting some real feedback on this question. Afterall these tires will not only be on the car a long time, they'll have my wife riding on them so that is an important investment to me. I still need the input. Remember, it's her driving it, not me.

My list I'm giving my 'tire guy' now includes the below for pricing. The decision won't be based on pricing though. I'm after 1.) safe in wet conditions (it doesn't snow in San Diego guys!!), 2.) handling/braking, 3.) quietness and 4.) longevity.

General G-MAX AS-03
Continental's ExtremeContact DWS
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3
Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 or P02
Yokohama AVID ENVigor
Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval AS

Pricing is in on all the selection. Just for comp's here's what I've got:

General G-MAX AS-03..............................$402.28
Continental's ExtremeContact DWS...........$493.00
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3..........................$605.32
Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 or P02.................$352.60
Yokohama AVID ENVigor........................$454.12
Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season..............$430.36
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval AS.............$460.60

Those prices are all in for 4 tires (2 each 205/55r16 and 2 each 225/50r16) with taxes, mounting, balance, etc. except for road hazard at $15/tire.

I think that's a pretty good spectrum of cost which for the range a few dollars won't be the deciding factor. That will be the others of safety, comfort, handling and longevity.

friends on another forum don't like the Continental's ExtremeContact DWS because of soft side wall, not sure about the Continental's ExtremeContact DW.

here is some light reading for you, test General G-MAX AS-03 vs Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season vs Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval AShttp://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=173

another test Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season vs Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 vs Yokohama AVID ENVigor.

And for the same series of Tire Rack test to get the Continental ExtremeContact DWS and the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus together on the same test need to go to:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=147

After reading all 3 tests, I'm leaning toward the Yoko's and the Generals. Likely going to go to the Yoko's due to the less aggressive tread and ergo, bit quieter ride. But I do like the looks of the Generals from an aesthetic point. Don't know if the wife would and it's her car so last call is hers.
