i'm putting new tires on all 4 corners tomorrow. the plans are for a spirited drive on sunday. i really won't have a lot of time to put miles on the tires between tomorrow and sunday. does anybody know of any tips or tricks (other than doing lots of miles or burn outs) to get the tires broken in short order?

i tried to edit this because i saw that i spelled advice wrong, but unless i'm missing it, i guess we can't edit the headers...

Scott, A torch wurks guud. Just heat um up an stop jus afor they flame up and melt....:hb::hb:Or you could do like them Nascar drivers an turn back an forth real fast. Heeee Heeee:):):)

:confused:Never heard of breaking in tires. I understand the logic for heating up the tires and that will come from normal driving. Unless "advice" has been changed in the header and the text of your post, it's correctly used and spelled. :tu:A+ for correct word usage and spelling.

Tire break-in?

Yes, new tires do require a break-in period of maybe 500 miles or so to wear off the remaining mold release compoound. I suppose most drivers never really notice the difference in traction.

Also, the tall tread blocks will be a bit squiggly when brand new until they wear down a bit, affecting cornering performance.

Another thing, the wheel lugs should be re-torqued after about 50 miles of driving.

Enjoy the drive....just be a bit cautious until the mold release is worm away, especially if the pavement is wet.

I just put on ultra summer performance tires, and they recommend 500 mile break-in. I have not notice a loss of performance, even with all the rain we had over this weekend. Unless you are tracking the car on Sunday, just enjoy the spirited drive. The tires should work fine.

I was going to say about 500 miles as well. The last set of Michelin PE2 (which isn't even a max perf tire) was the first set I have ever noticed the mold release goo. Sure enough after a few hundred miles it was gone. I wouldn't advise any at the limit driving until it is gone as cornering gave me a very uneasy feeling.

What do you think, winding up Glendora Mountain Road will scuff them up...

i know about the retorque, but thanks for the reminder. no matter how many miles i have put on them, all 20 will be torqued to 85 ft lbs for sunday morn.

whoever corrected my typo from, "advise" to, "advice", thank you too!

Which tires are you getting? If you're getting PS2s again, I remember I had to put in over 500 miles on a set of PS2s before they really felt good.

On a set of Bridgestone RE050A pole positions, they seemed to reach full potential within about 200 miles.

Oh and for tire break-in, burnouts and aggressive driving is not recommended. For break-in you're supposed to allow for light acceleration, braking and cornering.

If you go to the used tyre store, you can avoid all this breakin stuff. Let someone else do it fer Ya. Thats my plan, I got two tyres fer my wifa car fer $10.00 they waz different colors so I put one on the lef and tha othr on the right, she never noticed......:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh: Car sits funny cause them tyres waz different sizes too....:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:(((only in Norf Caroliner)))):biglaugh::biglaugh:

I thought it was 80lbs of torque? Is it different for SLK55's? I made it a habit to re-torque my tires and also check the tire pressure every month after a wash.

I had to replace my left rear tire on my 55 last week after I ran over some mysterious object on the 77 in NC. I've only had the car for 3.5 weeks since it came back from Germany and with only 1400 miles, I already had to replace a tire. $330 later, I'm back on the road. As it turns out, the dealer doesn't fill the tire with air. They use nitrogen. Apparently it stays cooler at speed and the pressure is less likely to increase with "hot" use. I didn't go back in for a torque check, but I just might after reading this thread. As far as the nitrogen, I can't tell a difference. Does the factory fill the tires with nitrogen? I think nitrogen is used for aircraft because of the temperature properties and the inert aspect... right?

Oh yeah... even with one tire, the car gets squirmy under acceleration. And powering out of some turns requires a lot of skill because for some reason, traction control can't detect the slight fishtail. The tire has 400 miles on it now, and it's getting some grip now, but I sure wouldn't take my car through the blue ridge parkway on June 2 without getting that tire into proper condition.

I say it's not going to effect the later performance of the tyre but it will directly effect the cars traction until you have done 20miles on them. Not sure about 500. I never used to run in my motorcycle tyres before track time. but how you going to run in the little bits on the edge unless you going fast enough to be using the little bits on the edge. haha

Again with manufactures its like anything. the longer you take it easy with there product the less chance of anything going wrong with it and it costing them more money.

MB say torque to 110Nm so thats about 81lbs for all the SLK's but then maybe Scott's alloys have instructions telling him differently and of course he should follow them first.

As for checking the torque thats at 60 Miles but only for a first fit but of course its good practice to check them anyways just to be on the safe side of things and i find about 150/200 miles is normally enough to scrub them up good enough that you don't get any squirm but the more miles you can get on them before giving the car a hard time the better from the manufacturers point of view.

in2dwww, Thats a good call of the dealer with the N its great stuff very stable throughout the entire operating range and a must for anybody who has the option, the factory use bog standard air just pumped in same as most places but thats more for cost than anything else so much easier to just buy a compressor then to keep one topped up with N when your dealing with the amount of cars they are it soon adds up to a large bill.

And Scott no worries mate i figured you meant advice, the reason it would not edit the post title is because the thread assumes the same name and you need to be a mod to get the right page open to change it.

Well, the owner of the MB dealer also owns a few other "things," one of which is a NASCAR team... Mears won for him last weekend. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I do enjoy the benefits of the NASCAR crews. Now if only they could change my tires in under a minute!

I've never worried about car tires but on my motorcycles, I always lightly scrub the tread with a fine wire brush before my first ride and this has seemed to allow me to scuff them up much easier and quicker.
