Hi all,

We've recently noticed the engine jitters on cold start up but does not happen any other time so we've taken it to a trusted independent garage, and we've been told the timing chain needed changing. While I've not seen any mention of timing chain problem in this forum but have checked the internet and the symptom appears to suggests a timing chain issue.

The question I have is whether anyone here needed to have their timing chain replaced or am I the unlucky few? My understanding is that timing chain should not need to be replaced.

The car is 5.5 years old with about 43,000 miles on the clock.

Thanks

Not quite rattling. The engine sounded a bit "weak" at cold start and took about 5 seconds more than usual to fully start. The mechanic has changed the tensioner but did not fixed the problem and is certain it's the timing chain.

Otherwise the engine seems running fine other time. The car has an A service a couple months ago.

Thanks.

Any info on cam chain / sprocket issues with the R172 @jbanks15 ,,thought it was all R171 problems.

Agreed it's unusual the timing chain needs changing and this was also mentioned by the mechanic but he has also mentioned they have changed timing chain in recent years. They are going to change the timing chain today / tomorrow and hopefully we'll have the car back on Friday / Monday. I should find out more then.

I can understand if lack of oil changes have occured in the past ....
But you have not done many miles as such .

Oil change records on car or correct oil viscosity ?

Yes, we've kept up with the annual service, which does change the engine oil, and did check the engine oil level before taking to the garage. In fact, the car was serviced back in December.

I've had the car for 3 years and then passed on to the wife 12 months ago. The car had about 9,000 miles on the clock when I bought it so I think it's unlikely as a result of previous owner but wouldn't rule it out.

Looks like there are not many / no-one has come across with similar experience so I would be very interested to see when it's "fixed". I know the garage is trusted and highly regarded, and I have used them a few times before with good impression.

Just called the garage today and they are still waiting for the timing chain part after 1 week. Do Mercedes parts take "long time" to deliver for Independent Garages? Or just the timing chain because it's unusual needed replacing? They reckon it'll be Thursday this week... The car has been with them for just over 2 weeks now.

Two day delivery for me
Or next day for overnight delivery .

But your car is new so should be in stock at one of the merc agents or Elc Milton Keynes depot .

So after about 4 weeks, we finally have the car back. It turned out the timing chain was stretched and caused timing skipped, and subsequently caused damage to the CAM Adjuster. They reckon the CAM Adjuster is as a result of the stretched timing chain as it's worked so hard to try to keep the timing. There is a noticeable difference in the engine, which is running a lot smoother now. Definitely no rattle at cold start.

Unfortunately we have now discovered a leak from the roof in the passenger side, which the main dealer have replaced the seals just over 2 years ago. Hopefully they'll fix this without any cost to us.

Hi,

I am interested in this timing chain problem, my car has reach 40,000 miles, to those posting on this subject who have had timing chain problems on the M271 1.8 cgi engine, who used the stop/start function on a regular basis and who did not, this might at least get rid of one of the possible causes.

My SLK250 would make an engine rattle sound when coasting with the engine hot.

I asked the shop about it for like 4 oil changes and they had no idea.

I went to Mobil One High Mileage oil 10W-40 and there has not been a single repeat of the rattle.
