Timing Chain Assessment/Change

4473 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ryasotharan
Hi guys,

I've recently bought a new SLK 200 Kompressor which has just done 100k miles.

I've got no evidence of the timing chain needing replacing BUT do you recommend I get it changed anyway?

Is it easy to assess if the timing chain and sprockets need changing or is it too hidden behind the engine?

Thanks guys. I'm glad to be a part of this wonderful collective group!

If it ain't broke, don't fixed it. But get it checked out if it concerns you

Thanks Jeff. I've been reading a few other threads and some say the 2005 Model can have problems with the timing chain and sprocket and mine has done 100k miles.

Is it easy for a mechanic to assess the timing chain/sprockets without having to take the car apart?
Not the expert though I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once, but I am sure they know tricks to get into every niche we can only imagine. But they will still charge that hourly fee :D
The timing chain and camshaft sprockets are at the front of the engine, you'll need to remove the plugs, electrics camshaft cover etc to be able to check if you have play in the chain, which seems to be the biggest culprit of teeth wearing on the sprockets and subsequently jumping a position or two...

Is a fairly cheap job to asses your timing chain and timing gears. If i was you i will do this sooner then later. This can cause serious damage on your engine. My m271 engine damage by worn timing gears...

Sorry to hear about your damaged engine! Will definitely get it checked.

Thanks for your help.

Do Mercedes offer any guarantees for their timing chains in terms of mileage?
