Well, you have to admit that this particular subject is very specialized and will only appeal to a very small audience. As for me, I'd be just as happy with typed updates as you go instead of a weekly video update.

Not sure if you've fixed the top yet. I have a spare top pump laying around. If you want to, I'll ship it to you for a $100. Bought it on ebay for $250 a while ago, but did not end up replacing.

For anyone that's been following this thread. Here's an update:

The LS swap SLK project is officially dead. Here's why:

I've been building a YouTube channel and social media presence. I had thought there would be more interest in this swap, but after a few episodes it quickly became apparent that nearly no one cared about this. Realistically, there's no way I was going to continue to fab parts and put in a couple hundred hours into getting the project to a 'driveable' state. At that point, I'd just have a ****ty, poor handling car that I've put a lot of time into and it did nothing to build my business.

I'm keeping the LS and T5 trans because they're in great shape. I'm dumping the SLK chassis however. If anyone needs a stock engine and trans from an R170 in LA DM me. I'll be parting with the shell because, frankly it's trashed.

What's next? I'll probably move the powertrain into a superior chassis where there is more support. Likely a BRZ/FRS. There are already wiring harnesses and a decent little aftermarket around that.

Also, I'm getting a new Toyota Supra as soon as they are available. Loads of interest around a great car.

Until the next project - sayonara!

P.S. I'd also have to make custom headers to go around the front of the engine. The power steering column is completely in the way of the where the driver side header would go. I wouldn't attempt this project for anyone who is wondering.

Sad to see it go. I think you would have got more interest in a R171 as it looks much more modern. Good luck with the next project. You would probably get some great viewership in doing something that goes against the grain, like an Evo or WRX swap with an LS. Trailblazer SS drivetrain might be able to be modified to keep the AWD. That would be pretty sick.

Too bad you let fame ruin a bit of fun. My car is complete, 6 speed and all and I enjoy it every day and It doesn't matter how many people see it. We also had solutions to your steering linkage being in the way.

I am really bummed as well. Was looking forward to those videos.

Also, it seems like you've cut it loose a bit too early. On most crazy swap youtube projects things catch on once you post the final video of the car running. And then people go back to watch previous videos of the process. At least this was my behavior. Rarely have I watched any videos when the project was ongoing unless it's some already famous youtuber that has done other crazy projects before.

Anyway, sad to see this one go and good luck with your next swaps!

I'm not after fame, but the videos ARE a legitimate business. I don't just do them on the side. Video is part of how I make my living. I can't very well justify spending hundreds of hours on project that makes zero income and has little possibility to do so.

I did see your steering fix, with re-mounting the shaft. That looked like a TON of work. I value handling and maintaining suspension geometry and your solution looked like a whole massive project in itself.

Unfortunately when I post videos on the swap I get a few hundred views.

When I post videos on other topics I get tens or hundreds of thousands of views. It's disappointing that there is near zero interest in this project. I'll get it done, but I need to figure out how to present this material in a more entertaining manner.
Well, failing once is not enough. You need to keep going and keep smashing into hurdles , sometimes jumping those hurdles.
Have you never seen Hoovies Garage? He fails constantly. Fails every week. Episodes come constantly. Is he masochistic in his doomed projects..?

Failing and giving up is not entertaining.
But Hoovie has a huge following watching him buy one “cheapest XX in USA” disaster after another, find more problems and loose money again.

No one needs a LS in a SLK. We have the SLK32 and SLK55 for super grunt.

But an engine swap is all about the struggle not the ending.
So what’s the theme? LS engines in car after car. Ones no one would ever try. VW Golf, Nash Metropolitan, WRX, Honda CRX,
Chevy Corvair,,,,,,,,,

That is a shame. I thought you were doing this because you wanted one, not because you were trying to make a living off of it. Now I feel like I should get a consultancy fee for offering advice on this, since this just went from helping a fellow hobbyist to revenue generation for a business.

In the meantime, I've started looking for an R170. I've gone from wanting one for a conversion to wanting one to replace my Corolla for a work car because the Corolla is a manual and my right shoulder and left knee aren't up to shifting anymore. I had to have surgery several years ago on my left knee, and recently I did something to my right shoulder. It's almost like the universe is saying, "NOOO, NO MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS YOU!" Later on, after I re-engineer my Dakota, I might still do something with it. I plan to get serious about finding an R170 in about a month or so, still working on my mother's truck renovation (which is almost done) and fixing a few minor problems on the Corolla. And if I decide to do an R170 conversion, it will be because I like the idea of a 2 seater hard-top convertible with 5LB/HP or better ratio, not because I want people to pay me to watch me work on it.

Ok, give the guy a break. Why can't someone make a living out of working on a coll project? I have a ton of respect for him for trying to do this swap on the first place. If it was successful we would have gotten a ton of knowledge for free. Who cares if he made money on videos while doing it?

Well he go nearly 10,000 views here in 12 months which is pretty successful for a forum, just no one sends him a cheque for it.

I appreciate the interest guys, but as I said before, while it was a fun project, I can't dedicate hundreds of hours to a part of a business that has minimal chance of making any money. That is a poor business decision. I have had success with my other videos have had far more success with a lot less work. They also require zero investment of capital. Building a car costs money too.

Like I said before, I'll swap the LS into a different chassis at a future date. Hoovies Garage is not in the same league as me. There's no real comparison. He has nearly 700,000 subscribers. I don't. He has 105M views on his channel. I have 5M. Youtube does not promote you the same when you're small. Views = sponsor opportunities.

This is my last post on this topic.

Your arrogance and utter bull-rubbish astounds me, folks who want to build a hot rod / seriously modified Car do it for pleasure, not financial gain, and for those that become very good at it, some open up their own "Rod Shop" and earn a very good living building quality vehicles ...............

I, like others watched with initial interest and when you got to literally forcing and yanking the original engine from the SLK it became very obvious that you did not have the mechanical aptitude to do a decent conversion as per the guys like Turdo2 have achieved ..................

Then later on your attempts at mounting the LS1 were just painful to watch, and it became blatantly obvious that you'd never finish it !!

Exactly how I feel about it. I don't have a problem helping others with their personal projects, up to and including spending a day or two with a wrench in my hand but after finding out this was just some youtube income project I feel like I was robbed of some contracting pay. My automotive skills did not come cheap, and I didn't get them for the purpose of building someone else's business. I was robbed, man! Unsubscribed, and I'm deleting the link I had to this thread.

Yeah... it all comes down to principal. He used a few of my swap pictures and we exchanged quite a few texts, of which I have no problem (typically). Funniest part was when I asked if I could buy the manual shift boot if he wasn't going to use it - Next video that came out, he messes around with it and drops it on the ground! :laugh::laugh::laugh:

The bit that really had me howling was when he decided to cut a big hole in the bonnet, (hood) instead of fabricating 2 decent engine mount brackets to get the engine central and lower .............
