I think the listed price is fair.
Hmm, $10,000 just seems a lot to me for a 15 yr old 170. It's about twice the price of the next most expensive, but then that 29k miles is pretty special...

Give the arches a thorough check for rust, if the bodies solid go for it!!

For that engine the mileage doesn`t make any difference, the Price is way too high, try insuring it for £7000.

I would have thought somewhere between £5500 to £6000 tops.

Looks in very good condition, but a bit expensive in comparison with other car prices I've seen on eBayUK, I've seen r171s go for less....

Do you have a "book value" were you live?

Here in Canada we have a book value that the used car sales people use that breaks down prices today for older cars. They give wholesale values that the used car people buy for, retail for what they sell for and an adjustment for odometers readings and an add-on for major optional equipment that is not standard. Back in 2001 the car at suggested factory retail was $60,000 CDN.

2001 SLK 320 with 30,000 miles (roughly 48,000 kms) is wholesale today in Ontario Canada $5540 and retail $8200.

Using British pounds instead of Canadian dollars puts that at $2700 GBP wholesale and $3990 GBP retail.

In USA money that is $3800 wholesale and $5795 retail.
After many months of looking I settled on a 2000 320 had 82500 miles a fairly good service history done less than 3000 miles in the last 5 years but had been serviced every year and has 2 rust spots, you can check out its mot history if you want its on the dvla website.
I paid just over £4000 for it give Jeff the vin number and find out if its been messed with should have AMG wheels etc. Low mileage is good but why has it not been driven have done 2000 miles in 6 months since I bought it and neglecting my bikes, at the end of the day is the low mileage worth £2000, I don't think so until it becomes a classic £5000 tops.
Regards Stuart.

Price is a personal thing. I'd not pay that much, but if it's the right car for you go and check it out.

Make sure you take the checklists for buying second hand. Wish I had.
Going through that list may give you your answer anyway.
At that price it has to be perfect. One owner, FULL MB service history at a main dealer. No rust, blemishes. Show condition inside and out.

search for 'new/used vehicle pickup checklist'. For some reason I can't copy/paste it.

Have a look at this one then, some sellers think they will get this sort of ridiculous price, again you would never get to insure it at those prices.R)

Our first was that colour!!
The Mrs loved it.
We are on our fourth 170 now, they have all been great cars, the later models have never had the same appeal to me.
If you could get your girl friend to try the car on a lovely Summers day she'd definitely buy it
320 is the way to go, much smoother and emits a glorious note from the tail pipe

Wow $12000 GBP and $20000 GBP for a 1997 SLK 230 and a 1999 SLK 230? This translates to just over $24K and $41K CDN. It would be worth it for all of us to ship our cars to Britain and sell them there if people were indeed buying them for that much. Again here even with low mileage it is 4X's or at the least 3X's as much as would be here in Canada for that year and condition.

I see them priced all over the place here in Florida. That sounds high, but the miles are low (not as low as the one link for under 10k miles) and it seems in good condition. Check out this link..... The listing initially said that "the price is not negotiable". Great car, but the top doesn't work, it needs tires and the glovebox is cracked..... Sounds overpriced to me.

I love my 230 with its 6 speed, but I do think the 320 has a much nicer exhaust sound.

Exactly my thoughts. Problem is, she really wants an Audi A1....
Two years ago, I paid $14,500 for my 2001 SLK320 with 17,000 miles. I thought the car was in great condition and worth the price. The only repairs I have done on the car since were the top cylinders which I expected to go, and replacing the lateral acceleration sensor. It was worth a premium to me to get a low mileage car.
