supercharger oil change

How often should you change the oil ?
I have read the pelican article which they say MB reckons its good for 100,000 but they advise to change it at 50,000 , my r170 has done 47,000 so my other half was thinking of changing it , any advice would be grateful also recommendations of what oil , as I live in the U.K. some of the oils are not available here .

Linda, look up supercharger oil on e-bay. they do kits of oil, syringe with measurements on it. and tube fitting the syringe.
then look on you tube for oil change slk 230k.
the old oil stinks so wear old clothes.
measure how much you take out with the syringe.
refill with that amount and check the oil is to the start of the threads on the s/c, don't overfill (or underfill)
easy job if you are mechanically minded. and can be done while still on the car.
also look at the link at the top of this thread, it says virtually same as what what i do.

Hi all,

Just wanted to feedback after doing this today (in-situ) and after @curro101's comments on a different thread.
Question for the community:

How much old oil did you manage to extract when you did this?

From what I can gather, people have said they removed about 50ml.

We've got an R170 1999 230 Kompressor with 106k miles (170k kilometres) on the clock.

Bought a kit with the syringe and 140ml of oil from recommended source in the UK.

Used the kit today and we didn't manage to extract ANY old oil. ?. None. ? Maybe 1mil.

But........we COULD add 45ml.

This leads me to believe she was thirsty. (Ya think.)

So, little bit worried about that. Haven't noticed any weird noises or performance issues since we've had her. I CANNOT believe there was no oil in there, but what other conclusion can I draw?

Anyone got any thoughts?

I would say I got 60ish ml out .

If you filled it on a lever surface and stopped as soon as it started coming out of the fill hole , I would say that yes , yours was lacking !

Have you noticed any difference when driving ?

Yep...you know I test drove her ?

Thought she went like billy-o!!! But might be just in my mind. The engine didn't sound any different.

It was on a level surface.

Unbelievable to me that there was so little oil in there. Dodged a bullet, methinks. Will monitor her over the next few weeks and months.

Would be very interested to hear what others have experienced. Guys, do it and let us know! Can't do any harm, can it?

Is anyone got information about R171's Eaton M65 supercharger?
I haven't got any info aout this yet. Is M65 has own oil circuit too?

@Beppi, @#FullDragon,

Not 100% sure personally, but from what I have seen on the internet, the oil / oil refill kits are available for all models of superchargers. That would lead me to believe it is possible and can be done. Whether it's necessary or not is your call.

I know members with R170s and R171s have done it.

Not sure what you mean by info ?

The r171 200k uses the M65 , therefore you can refer to what I've mentioned ..
I mean any official information from MB or from Eaton. How many KMs is the oil change period and exactly which specific oil must I use for the Eaton M65.
I would be happy if I would see these informations in a Mercedes or an Eaton brossure.

@#FullDragon........click on this link that jbanks kindly put at the top of this thread for you. It gives you all the info you are looking for. Both the M62 and the M45. The R170 and R171 are similar methods as far as I can work out. It gives various recommendations and even part numbers for the oil as well as capacities. And a great pictorial on how to do it. Search on the net for supercharger oil...see what comes up. Loads came up for me.

Maybe it's not so much"official" as a guideline. You need make your own decision based on what you think after researching it. All I can tell you is - I did it. And I'm glad I did. Ours has done 107,000 miles and from what we could work out, there was little or no oil in the supercharger. ?

I'm a bit of a risk taker.......so decided to canvass opinion from those who had done it and just jump in without "official" confirmation. That's the kinda girl I am ?

If you're waiting for the official go-ahead from some divine being.....you'll be waiting a long time ???.

Unless you count me, and I've been told I'm quite divine ?

Seriously, what harm can it do? It's pretty easy to DIY.

Mercedes will tell you it doesn't need to be changed , but after my personal experience , I say it's definately worth it .
The seller in the link on the other thread , guaranteed me that the oil he sells is equivalent or superior to the original !
You can also look up Eaton , contact them and see if they can send you info on the M65 ?

@clown : I've already checked it and many other informations had read before posting of course, thanks your experiences anyway. I am not a car mechanic but I always take care my car as much as I can - just ask my wife :D The reason why I can not able to see clear is: I have read this thread and another on mbworld where a guy went to the MB dealer with these infos above and they just looked at him wonderingly and said to him where did he collect his informations, there is no any oil in the M65 supercharger at all.
So I just try to collect relevant informations. You are right, oil changing doesn't do any wrong thing but I wouldn't buy MB supercharger oil if it is totally unreasoning.
Anyway, I have already ordered the smaller pulley upgrade for the SC, so it will be getting out from the engine everyhow and if it has own oil circuit then it will be changed.
@curro101 : I try to take contact with Eaton. Regarding to the equivalent oil unfortunately I am not living in the US or in the UK the things goes differently in the Eastern-EU I only trust in OEM products always if it is possible and only with my mechanic ;) Thank you too Bro.

I can guarantee you that it has oil , the people at the MB dealer , probably didn't know anything about it , as Mercedes doesn't deem changing it neccessary .
Mercedes doesn't make oil , they only buy it in from elsewhere in a container with their name on it and charge twice as much for the same product you can get elsewhere , but if you can afford it and feel better , by all means get it from Mercedes .
When you remove the kompressor for the pulley change , you should be able to remove much more oil than when it's still on the car ..

Did you guys use the Mobil Jet Oil II as Pelican recommends? ACdelco also has an oil that many use. My SLK has 154k miles and I am finding the prev owner did not hardly do any routine maintenance on the vehicle. That being said, beside the kompressor oil change, should I replace the bearing and/or pulley? At what point do you perform a snout rebuild or full on supercharger rebuild? Forgive me if this has already been asked, I'm new. Had this car a little over a week and replacing A LOT.
