Thought I had one, but my offer wasn't accepted. Seems like lots of sellers out there think their car is worth a lot more than the market does. I'd probably be the same way if I was the seller.

Anyway the search goes on. It's got to be yellow which means 2003 and earlier. Low miles, automatic transmission, service records, one or two owners, no paint/body work, etc. Still being pretty particular at this point since I really don't need the car - just want one.

Willing to travel for the right one at the right price. I've become really familiar with the ones on the internet that I've seen.

Various yellow colors were available up through 2007 in the US (so R170 & R171's) as custom orders from the Factory. The 2004 R171 was available with Sunburst Yellow (0685) as a standard color offering. I've seen three, one in the US, and two in Europe, and it is an amazing color.

What's your price range?

I've seen a goldish kind of yellow that I'm not interested in. It's sunburst yellow that I want. I'm thinking that for around $15,000 I ought to be able to get a really nice car. Accurate?

First post.. I know I know..

I have a 1999 yellow SLK.

I'm currently living in Hickory, I go to school in Boone, NC.

I just joined this forum to search about replacing the battery (it went dead at a Sonic and then again in Boone). Found some other annoyance solutions in here but I haven't had time to apply them.

All the pictures are on www.facebook.com/michael.roper and a few are on www.myspace.com/thatroperdude. I'll upload some here eventually.

I love my car to death. Most people think I'm married to it. My mother has a 1998 white slk. My cousin has a 2001 black slk.

Medium-long story on why I may have to let her go if you care to hear it just let me know and I'll email you.

Mileage just turned 100,000 a couple weeks ago (I even have the pictures of it online). I am the second owner, when I got it the mileage was 86,000ish. The first owner was from Virginia, I found his speeding ticket in my stuff :)

Complete honesty of everything that I know was/is wrong/fixed with her:
When I purchased the car it was under a special warranty. My power steering was acting funny and I had it replaced. No problems with that since then (about a year ago.) Occasionally the top wouldn't work, so while it was at the repair shop I asked them to check out the top but they couldn't get it to mess up.
Today I tried to use the top and it didn't work. After reading on the forum I think the problem is in the trunk sensor switch because of where it stops in the process. There's no hydraulic leaking or other odd lifting problems I've read about.

..
When I was coming home from school about 2 and a half months ago the car shut off on me. It started back up a few minutes later. I asked my friend (who went to the Mercedes Benz school in chicago) about it. He thought it was either low battery or a computer problem. The car ran completely normal for a while after that and my ignorance didn't check the battery. I assumed it was the computer. So, I took it to a German auto shop. The man told me it was a "DAS problem that required the dash to be removed" and I needed a new set of keys and it would cost ~$3,000. He also told me that he just did that to a red Mercedes two weeks earlier and I immediately had a gut instinct that something wasn't right in that story. It felt scammy..
So 2 months later (about a week and a half ago)... I was sitting at Sonic with my girlfriend and my battery didn't have enough power to crank back up. A friend came and jumped off my car (slightly embarrassing.) I thought I let the radio run too long or something and I realized that maybe there was something wrong with the battery.

My dad connected a battery charger up to it and let it run for an hour. It showed no problems until.. Wednesday I drove it 50 miles north to Boone, went out to eat, went to the grocery store and to my girlfriend's apartment. Next day it didn't start. The lights seemed bright, radio worked, etc.

Being away from home, I decided to call Mercedes Roadside Assistance even though I didn't think I was covered (didn't buy it from MB.) They were awesome for me.

I specifically asked them about the key replacement deal that scammy man told me and they said that didn't apply to my car. They gave me a complimentary jump start. The man who jumped my car off said he thought it was a short in the battery.

Today I got a new battery from NAPA. 75 month warranty. Ran perfect all day.
Other notes..

  • I've changed rear tires on it, they're the top of the line Coopers for sporty and all weather. The fronts are still goodyear that came on it when I bought it.
  • I changed ALL lights in the car when I bought it. Even the side turn signals I changed from a yellow bulb to white bulb for a cleaner look.
  • I put the brightest and best headlamps in it (not HID though). The bulbs also have the special sealant applied around the edges to prevent water from getting in.
  • The interior had peeling/scratches. It was professionally handled by auto interior solutions, http://www.autobodysolutionsofnc.com/interior.html
  • On the front bumper there is a small spot where the clear coat is coming off. People don't notice unless I point it out. I want to get the same service that did the interior to fix this problem.
  • The wheels aren't the prettiest ones up close but they're not ugly.
  • The rearview mirror and driver's side mirror automatic tinting feature isn't quite right (looking for solution.) You can still see fine.
  • Stock CD changer loads and turns on but always says "Magazine empty" when I press the button to play it.
  • Battery light never told me my battery was dying.
  • In the driver's side door jam, the metal guard for your feet has a little black rivet missing. Noone notices it.
  • Alarm was disconnected when I bought it and I didn't bother trying to hook it up.
  • One of the headlamp washer jets doesn't eject. I find it useless and didn't bother trying to fix it.
  • Only have 2 keys for it
  • The books that came with the car are in bad shape (torn, etc) but the leather case that holds them is in perfect condition. Each time I wash the car I always clean the interior and put conditioner on ALL the leather.
  • Slight scratch on the side visible up close in sunlight (it's 10 years old.. of course there are scratches)
That's EVERYTHING I consider imperfect about the car. I mean, sure birds aim to shit on yellow cars right after a clean wash but it's worth it.

My favorite parts about this car:

  • Torque feels stronger than my mom's slk.
  • Love the beautiful tone
  • The wet new look after putting on Mother's Back to Black trim cleaner. After a good wash I often receive compliments from strangers.
  • The feel of the road through the steering wheel
  • Cruising down the Blueridge parkway
  • Having the option to shift if desired
  • Memories
  • Surprisingly spacious trunk with spare tire I never used
  • Carbon fiber style on interior plastic
  • Sound system is perfect to my ears (Going to school for audio engineering & music)
  • Always clean
  • Great for dates/occasions
  • Being classy; not just muscle or fast.
  • Fits in compact parking spaces
  • Rare car, only seen three
  • Kickdown mode is fun

A short summary of why I should get rid of it:
My new apartment at school doesn't have a parking lot. This past year my car sat in the parking deck above the campus police station (covered and on camera.) Unfortunately, I didn't get to drive it but once every other weekend or so. One time almost an entire month went by without it being started. I am probably moving to LA when I graduate next year and I don't know if I could even take the car with me. It just doesn't fit in my life anymore. :(

When I saw your post I felt happy because I was dreading that it could go to someone who didn't have a passion for the car. I haven't decided for sure yet on whether to sell it but it would be best if I did it before school started again.

:tu:Yea, I like yellow also. Yellow, but not the yellow cab yellow as in the R171 above. Wifey and I had a 1999 VW NewBeetle which was a great looking yellow. Saturn Sky comes in a neat yellow.
