Steering noise

1257 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Geoffo
Hi, another problem developed yesterday. While manoeuvreing in the car park I noticed a knocking from the front left hand side. It is also present when static but moving the steering wheel from side to side. It is a definite knocking not a whine and only from the nearside. It's unnoticeable when driving and the handling seems fine. I suspect one of the bushes but could anyone point me in the right direction as there seem quite a lot of them. Many thanks.

Just to make sure check your front coil springs also have not snapped !

But safely jack up your car and grab the alloy wheel and check for any movement or play in the steering / arms / bushes etc

Maybe help from someone else while you do a visual check is better .

Thanks Delucas, pretty sure it's not the spring as they were only replaced 6 months ago but I'll check anyway. Reckon it's one of the bushes but I can't check till Tuesday (work) just trying to give myself a head start on where to look first.

New springs can break again sadly
Pot holes and some say the quality in the metal in the springs ??

But a close examination of both springs is simple with a led light .

But yes a bush or control arm sounds like it .
If you can hear it from the cabin it must be badly worn ?

Poss something come loose from the fitment of the coil spring 6 months ago ?

Check your nuts and bolts also for tightness .

Just managed to sneak a quick look. Spring seems OK can't see any undue wear in bushes but have a very small amount of vertical play on front wheel so possibly bearing. Have to get my mechanic to check next week I think.
