Need some help with my 99 SLK230. The car was running fine but had the usual codes pointing to a K40 relay problem. I replaced the relay with a new unit with no soldering issues and now it cranks but won't start and displays "Start error" on the dash. I also replaced the broken key fob with a new plastic shell (lock/unlock work fine). Any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance

I already did a search but didn't come up with anything that fixed the problem. I cleaned the MAF and will try replacing the key fob batteries, but any other suggestions would be appreciated. I'm starting to get frustrated with this car :-(

When you changed the plastic housing did you transfer the little rectangular (approx 1/4x1/2x1/8 thick block that was held down by the white plastic piece in the fob? This is the transducer trigger that is part of the anti-theft system. Without it the car won't go and it'll cost $300 or so to replace.
HTH

Edited:>>I just searched on "key fob replacement" and found this thread.

It explains the transducer perfectly.

Lol, yep that's exactly what it was. Thank god I I didn't throw the other key fob away. Put it in and the car started right up. Thank you SO much :)

I'm in the wrong time-zone to get in on this, but nice to see another contributor on the debugging forum. Nice one, Jim.

[Edit: removed reference to K40, since totally wrong in this thread]

Tolak- You must have me confused with someone else on the K-40. Mine is fine and so far have had no trouble with it. I do know how to solder though, for when the day comes that I need to repair mine.

I am just happy that I could save RoninZ some frustration. But Jayson needs to be thanked too. It was his fantastic write-up that explained the details for RoninZ, I'm sure.

Pardon my lunacy; I seem to have got a few wires crossed, and that always leads to K40 in my mind.
But my thanks for your involvement are, nonetheless, sincere.
