I have been looking at the star/das/xentry system and it is so expensive to buy a proper legit legal version, and I don't wish to buy a naff clone version that risks not working so I have been looking at alternatives. I found this company that operates in Belgium they are called Carsoft and they do a unit for 365 euros and it's called Ml6. I was wondering what you guys/experts think of it?

@i860 has a wealth of knowledge on DAS/Star.

He may be able to guide you to a cheaper (legit) option.

As far as I am aware Carsoft is legit, just not MB.

All things forum related need to be legit to comply with rule 6:-

I have an MI-6, it's not nearly as good as STAR but it's better than anything else I've found. I haven't tried any of the recent scanners though.

The MI-6 will do lots of other brands besides MB. I've tried it on all of our cars, it can be a little cryptic to get started with a new car but once you figure it out it works, mostly, sort of, or maybe really well - depending on the car.

For my SLK's it's been mostly OK.

I may not sound like much of a believer, but I'd buy it again without a doubt.

But will it do the same bag of tricks on a R172? Up to about 2011 coding was much easier and handled inside STAR which makes it possible for other vendors to do the same. With (for us) the introduction of the R172 almost every code needs a string that is some kind of hash from your VIN, the dealer and god knows what making it nearly impossible for other sellers to supply a working tool. Clearing and reading of (error)codes will still work but enabling options in the car? Doubt it!

There is no easy answer ....
365 euro for a diagnostic tool is a lot because you can buy a £6.00 elm327 Bluetooth and connect that with torque app on Android and will do the same as that 365 euro tool ( assuming you have 16 pin obd on your car and not 38 pin ).
Carli will not be able to do any codding will be able to show you generic codes like torque maybe you will be able to clear srs errors ( notable with torque ) but that about it.)
For your slk you need hht + das with c3 or a c4 mux not cheap if you want it legit but there are ways to get a clone.
Legit or not legit if you want scn codding you need a legit MB account which is not cheap but again there are ways to buy a one-time pass if you are stuck and need online scn.
If you are stuck PM and i can help you.

Thank you everyone for your input on this, it has really helped, I have been looking for a second hand ex mechanics system and saw one which I missed by a few hours that went for about £311 with the c3 multiplexer, but I'll keep my eyes open and see if anything else like that comes up.

For c3 you will need a laptop, you can also run a virtual machine but it could be slowwww.
I sold my old one to a member c3+laptop+software for £500 tested and demo before.
That's good they got a great deal on that, I am only looking as I wanted my CEL activated in the IC. I have since after looking at my instrument cluster realised that the CEL isn't the only light not working, the Red steering wheel light and the seatbelt light also don't show up when I turn the ignition on. So I'm not sure if it's an enabling problem now or an actual fault/tampering (from previous owner) that has stopped these from showing up.

I had similar dilema

Hooky DAS STAR from Ebay, that might not work next week, or other legit diagnostic scanner.

I went for ICARSOFT MBII for about £100

No it is not DAS/STAR, but it is a lot more than an ELM OBDII!

It will detect and interigate all the control modules on the car, displaying their (not just OBDII) fault codes, and then reset them.

It will display live data from each module (recently used to diagnose Parktronic, displaying module status, voltages and which sensors were or were not reading)

It can initiate some tests and re-calibrations (but I think these are available in the dash service mode).

It has also diagnosed an intermittant cam sensor.

I found it an invaluble tool for my car.

No affiliation with IcarSoft or any one selling them.

Unfortunatly I missed out on i860's system, £500 was a good price, but just too expensive at the time, and even at this moment! :frown: I just can not justify that sort of cost at the moment.

I have the icarsoft cr plus but I'm looking for something that can do more like enabling and programming for my slk320. I keep updating the cr plus but they haven't really added much to it yet since I bought it.
